It had been quite a good while since her transfer from Haven Weyr after the raid by the Holdless, and fortunately the girl had been allowed some time to accommodate not only to the changes -- but to the fact that the sole other person in all of Pern she cared for most was gone now as well. The leather strap bag he'd gotten her those many turns ago was still kept around with her at all times, the dual bangles made of gold from her mother usually stored inside whenever she wasn't performing or in a particular formal activity. Today was no different, and eight turns of life had only barely managed to scratch the surface of the purse vaguely. Every night the girl took care of the leather, treating and oiling it to keep it young and fresh. These were the last two things she had to remember her parents, and also dear sweet and kind Kioth, and Nayza would make sure to stretch their life span for as long as she lived at the very least. "Come now, you can't stay brooding forever. After all, you're not the only one that's lost loved ones... And you have a talent, a gift. You should be out there trying to place smiles on their faces, not rotting away in this room..."There was no one around, however, the sixteen turn old was merely speaking to herself -- trying, somehow, to nudge her mind out of its current pessimistic drive. She'd done enough wallowing in self pity, enough crying and enough grieving. It was time to move on. "Z'ter would have wanted so... Papa and Kioth would have definitely wanted so..." With an audible sigh the teen rubbed her eyes strongly with the back of her hands, taking in a deep breath before finally moving to a standing upright position on her bed. Another sigh, another deep breath, before she stood up. Moving to the wherhide sack at the foot of her bed she rummaged around her belongings, pulling out a white cotton blouse and some thick shorts before downing them on. It wasn't anything fancy, if anything it was clothing that was comfortable but didn't got in the way of any work she might need to do. Carefully she took her time to slowly braid her brunette locks into an intricate pattern -- and finally pleased with her appearance (and glad the puffiness of her eyes had dissolved since last night) the newest arrival finally made her way out of the room the girl candidates shared together. Her way to the common room was brief, and she had started to make her way in the direction of the Candidate Master's office -- when the dual voices from inside stopped her. It would seem he was busy, and thus the teen decided to instead head into the weyr hall for some food and come back at another time. After all, it would be rude and impolite of her to intrude into whatever the current Candidate Master and one of the Candidates were discussing. After all, when was the last time she'd had a decent meal? Perhaps some warm klah and a couple of meat rolls would do wonders for her before meeting the Candidate Master later. As she reached the entrance her amber eyes swept over the scenery for a moment, before finally pinpointing and locating the things she was after -- as well as an empty spot in a small table over by a corner. With swiftness and without missing a single step she had effectively managed to dodge around the present people and objects without barely gracing any at most. It was almost like a dance, really, should anyone actually bother to look with closer attention, and soon she found herself with a plate containing four rolls and a mug of nice, warm klah in her hands -- reaching her final destination and silently pleased to see it was still unoccupied. It was not that she loathed company, though neither was she a social butterfly, but this was a new place... And she knew absolutely no one here. "Perhaps I should have taken Papa on that offer to visit Refuge Weyr last summer..."Alas, she had simply been too busy between her Harper lessons and her extra hours of study on the side. She had declined the trip instead, and now a part of her mind and heart felt a pang of sadness at the memory. With a gentle shake of her head she chased such thoughts away, they would simply do her no good after all. Gracefully she sat down, taking a moment to savor the aroma of the klah before taking the first sip and enjoying its warmth. After a few minutes she finally started picking at her rolls, taking a bite out of one of them as she simply stared off into whatever she found amusing. Her mind was else where after all, continuing to think about this and that and anything else, to actually take proper notice of those present as she snacked away.

R'kin had come down to the the weyrhall to get some food after their weyrling training. He went to tray then got some food which included some soup and some rolls then a glass of water. When he walked around he found a empty table then sat down and started to eat. A few looks around he noticed that the area was mostly empty and smiled. The other weyrlings we're still busy with their dragons and was thankful that he had started out early. He'd gotten up early to start on Krestanovith with the bathing and oiling then smiled for a moment as he looked around. The young bronze weyrling continued to eat until his eyes landed on a young woman that he didn't recognize. He had to wonder was she a new candidate or someone who worked in the lower caverns. R'kin decided to get up and say hello as he got his tray then went up to her. "Hi, is anyone sitting here," asked R'kin as he looked at her? She seemed around his age and kept racking his mind trying to place her face. His bronze was sleeping back in their weyrling quarters and finally left him a moment alone. A quick glance around he noticed a few other people we're coming in to get something to eat. He didn't really like big crowds though a few people around him would be just fine. R'kin was still trying to get used to his weyrling group that included very different personalities. The personalities that we're the hardest to get used to we're the hold less boys that acted as if they didn't really care about anything. He worried what would become of them and how it would effect the others during training. His greatest concern was would they betray them for the hold less or maybe they could really trust them. The dragons wouldn't have chosen someone that would endanger them or couldn't be protected he had to wonder as he waited for the girl to speak.

Perhaps this wasn't so bad. Sure, she had lost some very dear people (and dragons) to the raid the Holdless had executed in Haven Weyr... But now she got to be in Refuge. Granted, had she ever impressed the chances of her being eventually transferred to Refuge Weyr had still been pretty high -- the shortening fresh blood pool among dragons had been something of growing concerns the past turns, warranty many transfers simply to widen the blood pool in both Weyrs and avoid inbreeding. Alright, so maybe this would have happen even without the aid of the Holdless eventually...
A long sigh was released as she raised a free hand to rub her temples, these thoughts were really not doing much to lighten her mood. Letting the meatroll sit back on its plate with its other companions she moved her left hand to grab the mug of klah and take another sip, a bit longer than the first had been. The warm brown liquid running down her throat was soothing and it relaxed her, something that she welcomed very much right now.
"Hi, is anyone sitting here?" "Mmm? Oh no, not at all."
Though slightly startled, mostly due to not paying attention to begin with, Nayza was quick to reply to the male. A friendly smile (albeit forced though pretty genuine looking thanks to the turns of performing experience, one had to learn to smile and look content for the crowd even if you didn't really felt it) played on her lips, a sign that he was welcomed to join her in her dinning if he so wished. Perhaps this was what she needed, meet some new people in this new Weyr. That should help get her mind off more gloomier topics.
"I'm Nayza. And you might be?"
Her right hand, having already long since stopped its massaging motion on her temples, was extended over to this new person in a friendly handshake -- her left hand releasing the mug of klah back on the table as it once again picked the now half eaten meatroll.

"I'm R'kin you must be new," said R'kin as he looked at her with a smile and looked out the outstretch hand. R'kin held out his right hand and while holding the tray with the left shook her hand. The bronze weyrling sat down then began to eat his bread and asked, "So are you a candidate or something else," with a smile? She had to be new the weyrling didn't remember her and he had a pretty good memory. She was of the age of a candidate and had to wonder would there be another gold egg on the sands again. The golden queen had laid two gold eggs for the last two turns and truly had to wonder if there would be another one this soon.
His eyes looked around there weren't that many people around and smiled. The weyrling loved to have the area to himself or with fewer people. R'kin didn't like crowds because they usually involved gossipers or older riders who thought little of the weyrlings. He had only been noticed lately because he rode a metallic and in a few months would be taken off to the side for lessons with a bronze rider. "Sorry," said R'kin as he realized how fast that he was eating and started to slow down realizing what a impression that he was making. His eating habits we're horrible at times and then just looked at her with a embarrassed look on his face.

"You could say that I suppose."
While she wasn't new-new as to have arrived these past days the female had barely spent more that two and a half sevendays in the Weyr or so. As the male returned her handshake she gave a friendly smile, before retreating her hand back to her plate and picking up her meatroll. Another bite was given into it, listening to his inquiries, before Nayza took a moment to swallow before answering. After all, it was quite rude to talk with a mouthful of food half chewed still in the way of your tongue.
"A candidate. Though I've also trained under the Harper craft for a long time in Haven Weyr -- so I'm hoping to become an apprentice over here in the same craft as well."
The silence that followed wasn't awkward exactly, but simple normal silence between two people eating. Nayza herself had no problem to continue consumption of her lunch as well -- after all, she had come here because she was hungry -- though her table manners were completely opposite to those of R'kin. Still, she alluded that to perhaps being opposite genders, it was rare to see a man (especially dragonriders) that weren't of high ranks eat delicately. A sip of her klah was taken before the sudden apology of the male caught her attention, Nayza tilting her head slightly in mild confusion.
"Whatever are you apologizing for?"
After all, he hadn't done anything to insult or antagonize her, and while she might have found his eating manners somewhat amusing they weren't enough to offend the girl.

"My bad manners," said R'kin as he looked at her for a moment then thought about what she had said. "Wow, a harper," said R'kin as he thought what a wonder that skill required because he had no such skills. He had only been a mere tailor before impressing his bronze and smiled at her. "That is a great skill," said R'kin as he smiled at her then continued to eat a bit. "How are you liking it here," asked R'kin as he looked at her and remebered his few days here? The bronze weyrling looked around then asked, "So are you wanting gold or would you be okay with a green?" He had to wonder because every candidate seemed to have their own preference.
While he had wanted to impress there had been no preference when he went onto the sands that day. His dragon was a surprise and was still getting used to what was expected of him. R'kin looked at her then said, "I never expected what would come to me that day on the sands,". A true surprise it had been and it made the day that much better then knowing what he would get. "Every color seems to be good in their own way," said R'kin as he smiled at her and thought back to that hatching day.

"Your... manners? Oh! Please, don't worry about it at all."
Really, the boy -- weyrling she deducted as he kept on speaking throughout their conversation -- didn't had the worst table manners she had ever seen. Sure,a bit messy and whatnot -- but not enough to insult others and require apologies. At his comments about her harper-ing the girl couldn't help but feel a small tinge of embarrasment, though she returned his compliment with a happy smile of gratitude.
"It's alright. Reminds me a lot about Haven Weyr..."
She refused to go deeper into the matter however, and even managed to keep her tone casual so as not to hint the weyrling of anything at all. His next inquiry about which color she was aiming for caught her a bit by surprise, the brunette rolling the question in her mind a bit as she chewed and took a sip of her klah, before finally coming up with an answer.
"To be honest I haven't really thought too much about it."
While she had grown around dragons, and she had always wanted to stand and impress a dragon one day. But she hadn't consciously thought about the options. And, sure, while she liked all dragons Nayza still found herself favoring the Gold over the Green just a bit more. Though, it was more than just the shiny, metallic hide and the high ranking powers they could ascend to. Frankly she liked the usually more down to earth and controlled natures of Queens -- most Greens tended to be a bit too social and just everywhere in Haven Weyr, not to mention the constant flights per turn each one could host.
While she liked performing and she loved singing, Nayza didn't liked to show off, and neither was she much of a flirt and interested in getting every person of the opposite sex interested on her. And sure, while she might be generalizing a bit, the brunette couldn't help bit feel a bit more inclined to the Gold colored female dragons.
"Then again... In the end we are supposedly paired with that dragon that compliments and completes us -- so in the end the color of their hide isn't really the most important thing. To love, and be loved in return, so unconditionally and purely... Just that is more than enough of a reason to be happy."

R'kin looked at her and smiled at such a thoughtful answer then ate some more soup. He had some more bread then asked, "So we're you there for the attack," referring to the attack at Haven a few months ago? The bronze weyrling couldn't really bare the thought of watchings all those dragons die and two queens. While the bloodlines we're down to two queens now and they had succeeded in decreasing the dragon bloodlines. It could cause them to be more decidable for sickness and would cause a lot of inbreeding.
He sighed as he thought about the attack and couldn't believe anyone would want to attack the dragons. The dragons protected against the thread that threatened everyone and he looked at her for a moment. "I don't mean to ask so many questions it's just that more of the transfers we're there for the attacks," asked R'kin as he looked at her? A bad flaw with him was that he sometimes asked too many questions and made people uncomfortable. A sip of his klah and he looked around for a moment while waiting for a answer.

"So were you there for the attack?"
The question was one that the female had so desperately hoped would not pop up to begin with, her lips hardening into the faintest of grimaces before they soon resumed her friendly smile. The change was almost unnoticeable, years of performing and singing having though the young woman to hide her emotions pretty well. After all, she was there to cheer their spirits (not make them feel more hopeless and despaired) so the best of smiles had to always be on her lips -- even if inside she didn't felt like smiling. It was a good skill to have, really.
"Yes, I was there for it. Being one of the Candidates I was transferred over here instead, since the search dragons still insisted I had the qualities they looked for. With our Queens gone it's only logical it'd be the better option/"
And she was grateful for it. Staying in Haven Weyr... It was simply too painful. "But anyways, tell me about yourself. You are a weyrling, correct? What's your dragon like?" She subtly tried to change the flow of the conversation, becoming the inquiry instead of the inquired now. She wanted to move the conversation far away from Haven, as far away as she could.

He listened to her for a second and realized what a hard question that it was to respond to. R'kin looked at her for a moment then said, "Yeah, a bronze named Krestanovith the only one in the last clutch,". The young bronze weyrling said, "Well his marvelous very much the opposite of what someone thinks of a normal bronze,". His bronze was very quiet and not very full of himself. "It's odd getting used to having someone else in your mind," said R'kin as he looked at her then smiled. "There was a gold in the last two clutches," said R'kin as he looked at her with a smile. His hope that there would be more queens they we're more needed then ever due to the shortage of gold queens.
"So do you have any pets or anything," asked R'kin as he looked at her? "I have a kitten named Lux," said R'kin as he looked at her and remebered that snow white kitten was asleep back at his weyr. R'kin had ended up with a instant family upon impressing and it was crazy to think that he might get a weyrmate one day or something else. His family was very proud of him and was thankful for his upbringing for a practical skill of tailoring which came in handy. He was able to repair his clothes no problem while many others had problems all the time.

"Really? Well, every dragonet is different after all. Krestanovith sounds like a wonderful name though."
So this one had impressed a bronze dragon? It was a little bit amusing, considering the personality she had seen so much of R'kin -- but it wasn't the worst thing in Pern. After all, just because some traits were stronger in some colors than others did not meant all dragons of the same color acted the same way -- and likewise not everyone that impressed them had to fit the pre-made mold conception people thought of how said color's rider should act and be like.
"Hopefully there will be a few more -- Faranth knows we need more, especially taking into account the two recent and premature losses."
While a Weyr needed all colors, and that was something Nayza knew well, without Golds the breed would simply die out. They were the only dragons tat could reproduce, period, and their numbers had drastically gone from four mature ones to two in a blink of an eye. No doubt some of these new golds would eventually be transferred to Haven most probabyl to help repopulate the Weyr after the attack -- but for now there was a sinking feeling in Nayza's chest. All the golds left, including the weyrling ones, were in this single Weyr.
She could only hope the same fate of Haven did not befall her new home.
"So do you have any pets or anything? I have a kitten named Lux." "Pets? No, I'm afraid not. Though I wouldn't mind getting one eventually after I settle down into Refuge Weyr life style. Pets can be wonderful things."
Not really finding what else to add to the conversation the teen kept on eating then -- after all she didn't wish for her meatrolls to grow cold and stale -- though she made sure to keep eye contact with the weyrling in case he had any more inquiries. He was quite the question asker, really.

R'kin kept listening to her then went back to his food while he hate the stew. He smiled at her then looked around as riders came and went then he asked one final question of her with great thought. "Would you like to meet my bronze," asked R'kin with a hopeful smile one his face and looked at her? The young bronze weyrling was definatley one that was friendly and his bronze went against the normal of the weyr. His bronze would only push leadership when it was demanded not one to go triumph itself over other colors. He was a lot like the weyrling gold and smiled at this their group was very different.
While he had finished his rolls and waited for her answer as he was through with dinner. "His down out the lake sunning," said R'kin as he felt the dragon that had moved from the barracks down to the lake to rest. Krestanovith had wanted to get out of the barracks and wanted to sun more then fight. It was going to be hard for them to assume leadership one day yet they would have to because of their coloring.

Well, really, when a weyrling placed on such a hopeful happy face... Who had the heart to say no? Especially to such a nice offer as to meeting their bonded? Whether Bronze, Brown or Blue, all hatchlings were magnificent gifts by Faranth, and Nayza wouldn't even dare entertain the thought of refusing the offer. Besides, maybe seeing a young dragonet would remind her that not everything in the world was messed up and going south.
"Sure, I'd love that R'kin. Shall we go now?"
She was done with her food right now, she really didn't felt like touching it anymore, and taking a few moments to store the leftover meatrolls in some wax paper and roll it before staching it away in her leather waist pouch she then finished her klah before nodding at the male weyrling.
"Lead the way then."
Yes, perhaps just seeing a young dragon and be reminded of the good things the Weyr still had going would give her some ease of mind.

"Great, his down by the lake," said R'kin with a smile as he looked at her then started to towards the weyr lake. R'kin smiled at the overgrown fire lizard as they got closer then said, "This is Krestanovith," as the bronze dragonet got up. He said to her, ""Hello, I'm Krestanovith," as he came up to butt her on the side. His playful nature was apparent as most of the dragonets seemed to be very playful around this time and smiled at him. The bronze weyrling rider just watched as he saw a few of the other dragonets swimming and had to admit it was a beautiful day to just get out.
"His playful today," said R'kin as he saw that Krestanovith wanted to be rubbed and wouldn't take no for an answer. R'kin just smiled and hoped that this brightened the young girl's day. The young bronze was one of only two metallics last clutch and he seemed to know it. "His a bit of a showoff I guess it comes from being a bronze," said R'kin as he looked around and wanted for her reaction. He was not one raised around dragonets like others and maybe she was more used to it then him.

The walk to the lake was quick, albeit rather silent, though soon they had reached their destination. A chuckle escaped Nayza as she watched the bronze dragonet, at first surprised of his forward approach of speaking directly into her mind. She knew not may dragons did it, at least not with other humans. It earned a smile from her, and she was more than willing to obligue his want to be rubbed and fussed over as he butted her side insistently.
"Well hello to you, too Krestanovith. Aren't you a handsome one?"
Been raised around dragons Nayza knew exactly the spots where they loved to be scratched and massaged the most, taking advantage of this information as she indulged the bronze with affection -- just as he wanted. It really was a nice day, she had to admit, and watching the other dragonets around the lake swimming and playing did managed to lift her spirits enough.
