Character Info:
Name: Karevel (known as Flitter to her friends)
Age: 12 Turns
Gender: Female
Rank: Weyrbrat, part of the Brat Pack
Family:
Karamba – Father: Lower Caverns Worker (53)
Everlin – Mother: Lower Caverns Worker (48)
Appearance:
(Face Claim: Amandla Stenberg)
Karevel is very childish in her appearance, having not yet reached an age where she would mature. Thus, she is still relatively cute. The tone of her skin contrasts nicely with the dark color of her eyes, and she is often smiling. Perhaps she will be beautiful when she is fully grown, perhaps she will not. For now, though, she can definitely be seen as both cute and childish. She has black hair which is not particularly long, nor is it very short. Karevel can normally be found with her hair twisted into several larger pieces, and each of these all tied to each other. She likes to keep her hair in one place so that she doesn’t have to worry about it ever being in her way.
Karevel is rather short, standing at just under 4’5”. Naturally, she still has a lot of growing to do, but it annoys her that she is shorter than a lot of her friends, even if quite a few of her friends are older than her. It’s not that she wants to be overly tall when she grows up, but she doesn’t want to be really tiny either. Hopefully in the next ten Turns she will have gained a foot or so of height, and finally be the height of all the grown people in the Weyr that she always finds herself looking up at.
Of course, being short has its advantages as well. It makes Karevel easy to overlook and helps her squeeze into tight places and reach things that no adult could. She has the agility of a young child, which is good news for her, since she lacks in such assists as speed, strength, and stamina. Karevel would most certainly lose any kind of fight that she found herself in, and unless a race involves dodging around many obstacles in a place she is familiar with, she will not fare well then either. This can make her extremely vulnerable, but she has never felt scared for herself. She is not fiery at all and doesn’t normally look at strangers with suspicion; rather she trusts that all people have good intentions. Not always a good thought to have.
She was gifted with keen eyesight and hearing. Both easily go to waste in her daily life; Karevel does little or nothing to use these advantages. When she tries, she has the ability to note things that don’t particularly stand out in a landscape, and if she would consent herself to listen, she could hear a lot of things that might not always be heard. These are just a few gifts she was granted that Karevel is not really aware of, and until she is, she is not likely to try to put them to good use. Perhaps time and age will make her grow wiser and pay more attention to her surroundings. She certainly does little of it at this junction.
Personality: Flitter could almost be Karevel’s real name, for it fits her so well, especially if one thinks of a Green firelizard when they look at her in the context of that name. Karevel can most often be found in her hyper mode. Her general personality makes her exceedingly bubbly, very adept at annoying any adult nearby, and almost capable of talking faster than the speed of sound. It always wise to be cautious around Karevel if she is extremely excited. It can be very hard to calm her down. She can hardly stand silence, and simply cannot go five seconds without saying something. No matter how many times someone may ask her to be quiet, she will bounce back in several seconds with something else on her mind; one would be lucky to have her silent for even a minute when she wants to talk. Her topics change very easily, and so long as she is saying something, she doesn’t really care what it is about. This is the most obvious thing that one can use to compare her to a real flitter, and perhaps even some of the more energetic dragons.
Just as Karevel has a hyper mode, she also has a stealth mode. The change can be very nearly instantaneous, but is not likely to be unsuspected; she doesn’t just become calm. There is but one idea that can calm her out of her constant chatter: mischief. For most children, perhaps, this would be something that would rile them up, but not for Karevel. She may not be exceedingly smart, but she is smart enough to know that, to pull off any kind of trick, one must be very quiet. Of course, this is a very large change, and more than once she finds it impossible for her to be quiet, contenting herself to talk at a mere whisper, but still occasionally being an obstacle in pulling something off. Thus, she is not always invited to do things that require absolute silence. Generally, she does them better by herself, simply because there isn’t anyone around to talk to then.
When she is quiet, and is contented as such for more than five minutes, Karevel is very good at it. She would make an excellent spy because she is capable of making herself very quiet, very small, and very normal. This is how she can pass by busy people in the Weyr without receiving a second glance, and sometimes not even be noticed in the first place. Naturally, this only works when she is quiet, and that is something she can’t always do.
One extra reason to associate Karevel’s codename with Green firelizards is how easily she will take orders. She is easily submissive to the leaders of the Brat Pack, and she not truly defiant to the adults of the Weyr. Rather, she sees the children in the Brat Pack as her family, and thus their leaders as her parents, and she never questions what anyone tells her. Part of this is because she is one of the youngest members, and even if there really isn’t much age difference, she still looks at the older children as being wiser than her, and she would rather do what they told her to do than what she thought she wanted to do. Karevel has found that often when she decides to do something herself, she does it wrong. Thus, she decided it was better to do what someone else tells her to do, since that brings a much better success rate than when she does things of her own accord.
But even that isn’t enough to set her akin to firelizards. Karevel has a wonderful sense of direction, and inside the Weyr, where she knows every passage and every shortcut to get from here to there; she can get from one place to another very easily. In her mind, it is quite elementary. She has a map of the Weyr in her head, something she can easily use to get places but could never hope to draw. Using this mind-map, she can, in a matter of some seconds, think up a route from here to there very quickly. If her sense of direction and memory where not as good as they were, Karevel would be unable to do this. As it is, spending her time crawling all over the Weyr with other children, and by herself occasionally, has paid off. She can go from one place to another so quickly that to someone else, it is almost as though she did go between. To Karevel, it is simple getting from place to another, which is something she has always done quickly, so it is not strange to her in the least when she can beat someone else to a destination, even if they get a head start.
Most of that can be contributed to her sense of direction, her Turns of living in the Weyr, and her good memory. The rest can be contributed to the fact that she is a fast person. Karevel does everything fast. She walks fast, eats fast, talks fast, does chores fast, annoys people fast, and just about everything else there is to be done. Even though she has rather short legs, and is no match for most people in any kind of race, she can often be found walking ahead of a group of people. Karevel walks fast quite naturally, and if someone tries to slow her down she finds it unnatural to walk the same speed as everyone else. While others may find it odd how quickly she does everything, Karevel is accustomed to it. She hates the moments when she is doing nothing, and would rather try to squeeze her way through a crowd of slowly-moving people than wait for them to slowly move. All that time speed walking also made her adept at dodging people and things in her way, and she doesn’t trip often.
Karevel is actually quite amicable. She has no real quarrel with all of the people that she will play jokes on. She only does it because it is fun and never really means it as something that causes harm to someone. Her definition of harm is very loose, but she can’t stand the sight or smell of blood so something that would get someone injured that badly is something she wants to stay out of. She doesn’t mind messing around with anyone, so long as no lasting harm is done, and so she has no qualms with running around making mischief in the Weyr. In fact, it is the one thing that she really enjoys doing.
Hobbies/Skills: Talking, of course, is her favorite hobby. It probably isn’t her best skill, but it is the one thing that she is good at. Karevel can be a surprisingly good distraction, and she’ll even enjoy doing it. All she has to do is walk up to someone and talk like she normally would, and suddenly she has their attention, whether or not they are busy or trying to pull her off. Trying to get rid of Karevel when she wants to talk to you can prove to be rather futile. She may not be any kind of a diplomat, and she isn’t likely to ever be, but she can make a very good distraction without even realizing that she is.
Her best skill is probably her memorization of places that she’s been too. Karevel has keen eyes and, when she wants to use them, she can spot landmarks that she can memorize and then use later to get from one place or another. Most of this memorizing is rather unconscious to her. She just doesn’t have much of a problem observing things even when she doesn’t really notice that she is observing them. This also makes her a good tracker, although she has to pay attention for that kind of thing. But if she wants too, Karevel can notice signs that show where someone was and where they are going, and sometimes even what they might have been doing in between. But while noticing landmarks is something she doesn’t really notice herself doing that much, tracking is something she actually has to be attention for, and she doesn’t really have the attention span for that.
Pets:
Name: Clover
Species: Firelizard
Color: Green
Age: 2 months
Appearance: Clover is of course a deep clover green. And everything is done in fours on her. Four dots of black are under each eye, four darker spots of green run down her spine and tail, there are even four claws on each foot.
Personality: Small and cuddly, this green just loves affection. She always seems to be in a good mood, not even the crankiest of her bad luck siblings seem to be able to get to her. And when you have such a happy girl always perched on your shoulder, how can anyone else ever have a bad day?
History: Karevel is fairly unique in that she has no siblings whatsoever. In fact, her parents her quite lucky to have even one child. They spent many Turns together childless before being blessed with a daughter, and she was sentenced to be an only child. However, life in a Weyr sets young children around many others their own age, so Karevel never found herself wanting for siblings. She had no one at home to get in arguments with, or someone older than her who could push her around or excel at things while she did not. Instead, she could make friends with whomever she wanted and, if she discovered later someone was not such a good friend, it would not be so hard to go a way separate from them. It has never bothered Karevel for a moment that she was slightly different in this way. Besides, there were a few others in similar situations, and what difference does it make?
While neither of her parents were dragonriders, they still had work that needed to be done, and Karevel grew up, like many other children, with multiple adults taking care of her. The people that worked under the jurisdiction of the Headwoman were almost like one large family, living under the same roof as the dragonriders and also sharing connections with them. At least that was what her childish mind comprehended it as.
From the very start, Karevel had lots of energy, and with parents that are often busy, this can allow a child to do many things she might not do if she was under complete and constant supervision. As it was, the very structure of the Weyr that Karevel was so used to also made it possible for her to sneak around the place when she got bored. ‘Sneak’ does not refer to her doing it at all quietly. She simply wandered around the place, as obvious to any passerby as was possibly, but enough people just let her wander around that she was soon familiar with all of the lower caverns in which she lived.
Even this wasn’t enough for young Karevel. She would love dearly to see the rider’s weyrs, but none of them were keen to have a talkative young girl around. Her parents told her that she wasn’t allowed up there because it was a place for riders and their dragons and that she could go if she was invited, or perhaps had a dragon of her own one day. She had to consent herself to the lower parts of the Weyr, where her presence was not so odd. She never truly got bored of wandering around all over the place, but she always loved to have people around, so often she could simply be found with the other Weyrbrats, just talking and occasionally playing games. It was fun enough for her, and as Karevel had seen little of the world she didn’t expect much else.
Things changed when Karevel was around seven Turns old. There was a group of children talking about going where they weren’t allowed to go. Well, if they were going to wander off into those areas of the Weyr, then why couldn’t she? Karevel followed them when they left, not in much of a sneaky fashion, and it was pretty obvious she was following since she tried to have a conversation the moment she caught up.
When Karevel first began to hang out with the members of the still-forming Brat Pack, it was only because they couldn’t get her to go away. No matter where they went, she could track them down and then follow them everywhere. It took a while, but eventually they realized she had talents of her own, both as a distraction and as a map. Since then, she became a solid part of the group, and while she isn’t always the person they want to hang around, she’s been useful in a lot of their vital plots in several different ways, and she’s sneaked into parts of the Weyr she hadn’t gone to before and thus added to her ever-growing mind-map.
