Appearance: This guard’s frame is a testament to the way he was raised, a tall form that states very calmly he can more than handle himself. A face with a strong jaw is accented by ruggedly handsome features and lips that were made for kissing. He looks hard, like he has seen his share of ugly and terrible things, and has only been made stronger by it. Yet for all the foreboding harshness of his figure, the angled and sturdy lines that form his body, he is still one to be called handsome. Eriol's attractiveness also lies in his capable appearance; his whole physique screams he is a man that you can count on. He holds no softness in his body, every muscle, joint, and tendon hard, straight, and unyielding. Much like his personality, there is no give to him; one look will tell you that. A blessed height of 6'2" is worn well with pure, lean muscle that is prominent, but far from burly or bulky. Wide shoulders and slim hips are the result of long hours of good, hard work and a gift of birth. Take a goooood look, ladies, ‘cause this is eye-candy right here. Overall, he looks as any member of the Dragon Shield should; strong and able.
Eriol's eyes are dark and sharp, a strength to those fathomless orbs to match his character. His intense gaze is very perceptive and keen, and when he looks at you, you can feel the passion behind his stare. He has a devotion to his work and his weyr, which is reflected so clearly in his burning eyes. They are blue, but not just a blue, they are a cold cobalt, like a frosty winter morning overhung with swirling clouds. His hair, like so many in the weyr, is short and practical, although it is not as short as most riders. It is an unusual blonde, bright highlights on top with darker, almost brown shades underneath. He is also darkly tanned, and though not quite brown, he's close. From his arms to his chest, down to line of his breeches, he is tanned wonderfully evenly.
As the son of the weyrguard’s captain, he has been pressured since birth to set an example for others, and so he always appears cool and put-together when at the weyr. His clothes are fitted well and are always in good repair, just as his protective gear for Shield work. When returning to Refuge after his shifts of prowling the jungle, Eriol favors the traditional wherhide boots, good, tough leathers that are cared for meticulously, and a clean, collared jerkin. He also favors tough wherhide jackets that fit his lean physique. However, much of his time is spent scouring the jungles surrounding Refuge, and when he is working, Eriol practically becomes a shadow. His clothing consists of sleeveless tunics in earthy tones, such as greens and browns, to blend in with the jungle, and light coats in the same shades. Wherhide pants are brown, always, with softly-tanned boots that protect his feet from the jungle hazards, but are specially made for the Dragon Shield and do not make any noise. He also carries several other necessities for surviving in the jungle.
There is one item that Eriol feels naked without and will wear always, no matter what, and that is the sword his father entrusted to him when he became captain of the Dragon Shield. It is an armament of great worth, but the weapon was a token of respect and pride, not a simple gift to a child. The cost that lies within the blade is a great deal of furs traded in on it, but the Shield captain has kept the sword painstakingly carefully since the day he received it, so the gift's worth is not in vain. The blade is double-edged, his father's immaculate taste shown in the fine, tapered points of each edge, which gleam with a cold fire in the light. An elaborate crossguard consisting of two dragon heads curling on both sides separates the blade from the hilt, which is wrapped in extremely fine black leather. Small amber gems of great worth are set into the dragon's eyes, which match the gem that is set into the pommel. The scabbard is crafted from the same black leather that is wrapped about the hilt of the sword, and unadorned. He wears the weapon without fail each day, slung from his belt.
Face Claim: Chris Hemsworth
Personality: There are more than a few things that all men and woman born in Refuge seem to have in common, but nothing is a more frequent trait than that indisputable weyr pride. Like a mantle, it settled over Eriol's shoulders the moment the Weyrwoman chose him to lead the Dragon Shield, and he hasn't taken it off since. A fierce and potent devotion to his weyr and his calling burns within him, and so drives him to become stronger and stronger. This passion is not just for the Weyr that he calls home, but for their sister weyr, Haven, and he will give his life to protect dragonkind. Eriol is no dragonrider, but he is just as devoted to Refuge as any of them, and Fall-bent on protecting the dragons and their riders from whatever dares to try to harm them. However, even though Eriol is driven to be an excellent captain and gives his all for his Shields, he is not always pressed with schedules and scouting missions. Sometimes he tends to dwell on the more mischievous endeavors when on leave from his duties; particularly playing pranks on his fellow members of the Dragon Shield. He is a sharding good captain, really, but with the heart of jester. The guard is extremely good at covering his tracks, though, and it’s hard to pin anything on him. He enjoys life to it’s fullest, so though he is a man with a great deal of responsibility on his shoulders, he tends to relieve his stress and tenseness with some harmless fun.
The captain knows no fear. His courage has been tested to the brink, and in pain or glory he is the same. Eriol has been captain of the Dragon Shield for six turns, and in those turns he has faced the dangers of the jungle, wild felines, and more than most in the North could ever dream of seeing. He would take any chance he had to, and put himself in any danger if it was requested of him. In his opinion, life is cheap unless you make the most of it. There is no point in living if you cannot use your life for some better end than just a meaningless death. There is no purpose in just being alive, only in living. He would rather go in a blaze of glory rather than die old and feeble. That is just the way he is. And so nothing bothers him, and in any danger he is calm, collected, and able to think logically and master himself completely. It is more than just bravery; it is a mastery over fear that few have achieved.
Lurking beneath that loyal, dedicated personality, however, is a surprisingly hot temper and a mischievous streak that simmers just beneath the surface. Though the captain keeps himself in check, his temper does at times get the better of him and he can erupt. One could call him rash, yet at the same time Eriol has a quick mind and can be extremely cunning. He is rather clever. He took to the life of the weyrguard rather well, but he is also wickedly thorny and has an eye and mind for elaborate tricks. When he and his mates are gathered together, it quite normally means that they are discussing stealth tactics or scouting schedules, yet those under his charge should not be fooled by his professional presentation; he could just as easily be planning an intricate deception. Though Eriol is undoubtedly a man you can count on and trust, he should also be looked at with caution, for although he is an undeniably incredible captain and a responsible man, he has a love of mischief when on leave from duty that no one should ignore.
Loyalty to his superiors is a trait that has been bred into the man, for his father held a firm belief in dedicating yourself to your leader. Eriol has and always will give his Weyrleaders the respect their positions deserve, even when he does not agree. However, do not expect him to meekly follow all of their commands. The Captain believes in voicing his opinion, and will do so even if it might get some backlash. The Dragon Shield has a reputation for being professional and good at what they do, however, so do not expect him to be rude. He won’t. Ever. Eriol has been taught from birth that those in authority should always be given their due, and so he will never speak against them in a discourteous way. The guard will merely state his case. He is also very restrained about his superiors, holding a tight rein on his rather unruly temper. They can berate him, criticize him, and he will stand stoically and take it, but he has to force himself, and I mean really force himself, to take it sitting down. He can do it when he wants to--he just does not enjoy it.
As far as women go, Eriol enjoys innocent flirtations and stealing some kisses here and there. He is a gifted leader, alright, and in that repertoire of gifts are a clever tongue and smooth words. The captain has the advantage of good looks with an absolutely delicious body, and it is not hard to talk some ladies into goo. However, somehow he rarely enjoys taking relationships to ‘that’ level, and has only had a few romps in the bedfurs with women who understood it wasn’t going anywhere past that. Perhaps he feels wrong starting a relationship when he knows that a woman will always take second place to his rank; He is Captain of the Dragon Shield before he is Eriol.
The captain’s hobbies include swordplay and collecting weapons, when he is not otherwise occupied with his duties or planning some trick, that is. Eriol enjoys testing his skill with a blade against others, and will never let a challenge go unanswered. He thoroughly enjoys duels, and when he is not engrossed in duties or playing sly tricks, weaponry and the art of battle holds his interest. Upon the walls of his quarters hang armaments of all sorts, from many styles of swords and rapiers to bows and daggers. He has a penchant for the collection of rare weapons as well. However, his only true skill lies in the sword-he is a fair shot with the bow, and he is pretty accurate with throwing daggers, but his brother and father easily outshoot him. However, they nearly pale in comparison to his swordplay.
E’riol is a man that was born to lead-too strong to be anything else.
Hobbies/Skills: Eriol’s hobbies are swordplay and duels, for he enjoys the thrill of battle, as well as intricate pranks. He also collects weapons as well, and tends to bet swords on duels--which is how he gained so many in his collection to start with. The captain has won most of them as prizes, for his ability with a blade is impressive. His arsenal of skills includes excellent leadership proficiency, all forms of combat, and extensive survival training for the wilds of the South. As a tactician, there are few who equal him, for he is clever and inventive when it comes to leading the Dragon Shield.
Pets: Kaiden, Bronze Firelizard (4 Turns)
Cub #5: The Shadow
Gender: Female
Description; The runt of the litter. She is the smallest and will probably grow to be smaller than the others by a little though she is probably not going to be noticeably so by people who don't know the felines well. She has a lighter coloring than her siblings and her spots are not quite as defined as either of her sisters. Her head is wide set and she has a black nose. She has a strong frame despite being small. With a stern unsettling gaze of green eyes, she can almost certainly unnerve strangers and passersby.
Personality: Laid back for a female, the little one is easily content. That is as long as she has everything she wants. What she wants is for her owner to let her follow him everywhere he goes and never leave her. She has horrible seperation anxiety when left alone. In these situations she will destroy things, mewl and cry for candlemarks on end, refuse to eat and sleep, creating a lot of problems for her handler. She is however a willing learner and is easily trained by her beloved companion. She will guard him with her life and often won't let strangers near him unless he remembers to give her the command to let them be. Sometimes she gets a little overzealous meeting people she likes and will pounce on them and lick their faces.
Owner/Handler: Eriol (Thorne)
History: Ederan was a good father, there is no room to argue that, but he was also strict in the way he raised his sons. From their births, all four of his boys were trained for combat, and he knew that each of them would become strong guards. His wife, Ariol, was of a less stoic set, however, with blue eyes that constantly betrayed her good humor, and she was as loving a mother as many could hope to ask for and softened Eriol’s childhood. Nonetheless, the Dragon Shield captain and his brothers had a tough upbringing and each of those boys as hard as nails because of it. Ederan spent every day in the training ring, honing his skill and muscle, and so expected each of his sons to do the same. His knowledge of weaponry and fighting techniques is impressively vast, and most of that knowledge has been passed on to Edol, Eriol, Arderol, and some to Areran, until he turned to beastcrafting.
As the second son of the Captain of the weyrguard, Eriol was a strong child with a promising future following in his father’s wake. He was brought up as a warrior from a young age, and Ederan was extremely proud of both he and his older brother, Edol. Since the elder son had only a single turn on him in age, Eriol was his equal in sparring and spent many hours practicing with him. Ederan looked on with a grin every afternoon as his sons fought in the training field, using every minute of spare time they had before dinner was prepared. Though there was plenty to occupy a young boy with about the busy weyr, neither he nor Edol held any interest outside of the sword. In their younger turns they had, naturally, played in the mud and pulled tricks like all little boys do, but at the age of twelve, in their respective turns, they had been taken under their father’s wing as soldiers. Though Eriol also has another younger brother, Areran, he did not see the man much after the other decided to select beastcrafting instead of weyrguarding. His family did not appreciate the choice, but Refuge is a weyr, and Areran had the freedom to choose, and so choose he did. So Eriol was merely raised alongside Edol, both brothers sharpening their skills against each other.
As a few turns passed, bringing Ederiol to the age of fifteen and Edol to sixteen, it soon became apparent that though younger he may be, Ederan’s second son was the best swordsman of their family. However, Edol’s skills were nothing to sneeze at either, considering he could best many of the guards his father commanded, and he was never jealous of his younger brother. A good-natured man, he was merely happy for the boy. Although, perhaps his far superior skill with the bow and throwing daggers had something to do with his amiable attitude. As two of the best guards, Ederan had deep plans laid for his sons, preparing Edol to become Captain after he retired. Later, Arderol reached the age of twelve, and was allowed to join his brothers in training. Though his face was undeniably feminine, and he suffered several jests because of it, the boy took to his lessons with vigor, applying himself wholeheartedly to best his prettyboy image. He, too, grew tall, strong and broad, even moreso than his brothers, with an impressive bulge of muscles on his arms and wide shoulders. The trio was rumored to be the best soldiers the guard had to offer, and the Captain’s pride grew for them. Although he was proud of his daughters as well, and wished them all the best, there is nothing that can match a man’s pride for his sons.
Two turns passed, and at the healthy age of eighteen Eriol was a guard under his father and a skilled fighter. He, Edol and Arderol thought of nothing but swords and glory, but it soon became apparent that Eriol’s future would be the most glorious. The boy proved himself time and time again, and even though he was a bit young, most members of the weyrguard respected and admired his courage, cunning, and skill with a blade. It was soon realized that he, not Edol, would become captain after his father retired, and because of this, the boy began to apply himself fully to the task of studying strategy and leadership. However, when Eriol reached his twenty-second turn, Aeriath Rose in Flight and declared herself queen of Refuge, and the Weyrwoman searched his father out, and Eriol’s life was changed overnight.
Raelwyn had a project she was laboring over, and alongside her granddame, a former member of the weyrguard, the goldrider had created a specialized unit of guards who would be given the task of watching the jungles and guarding the perimeter of Refuge where the dragons could not see. She needed a captain for this elite force, and Ederan wasted no time in telling the Weyrwoman just how capable and talented his second son was. So, the queenrider installed Eriol as her captain of the Dragon Shield, and bade him choose those he trusted the most of the weyrguard and commanded they be put under his charge. Now with Eriol in control of his own unit, Raelwyn saw to it they received extensive survival training and tracking skills for the jungle, and each Shield member honed their own defensive abilities to the point of exhaustion. Finally, one turn later, Eriol and his men were sent out, and the birth of the Dragon Shield was realized.
The Dragon Shield did their job perfectly, each man and woman silent, skilled, and deadly. Felines no longer threatened their outlying fields and small craftholds, and nothing ever escaped their trained eye. It was a dangerous life, but Eriol knew his destiny was realized in this station, and he was an exceptional leader. However, communication proved to present a problem, but soon enough, the Weyrwoman worked that out too. She, along with Eriol, took two of the largest firelizard eggs they could find, and when a bronze hatched for him, the Shield captain trained him from birth. The name of Kaiden was bestowed upon the flit, and he worked beautifully for his purpose. Afterwards, Eriol and his men scoured the jungle for the small clutches, and only the most mammoth eggs were taken. Now, communication is a snap, the firelizards carrying messages and ‘speaking’ telepathically with pictures and emotions to help the Dragon Shield stay in contact.
A mere two turns ago, Eriol was approached by a member of the weyrguard who spoke on behalf of his niece, whom he thought would be an excellent addition to the Shields. He was a trusted guard, and so the captain did as he requested, bringing the girl on a mission to test her skills and mettle. True to her uncle’s word, Kyrah was a talented guard and would make a fine addition to the Dragon Shield, and it did not take Eriol long to grow fond of her. She was a hot-headed thing, but she matched his own temper well, and he feels a brotherly affection and protectiveness for her. Eriol instated Kyrah into the Shields, taking her as his partner for missions. He has told her often it is because he wants to keep an eye on her, but deep down, it is only because he cares for her.
