Character Info:
Name: Kestrel
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Rank: Candidate
Family: The people who raised Kestrel and took on the role of her parents were Kendra and Bivryn. They were neither rich nor poor. Bivryn never spoke of her real parents until she was 18 turns when at last he confessed that his wife was barren and Kestrel had been their only hope of ever having a child of their own. When she pressed them both for more answers they merely told her they loved her and would not say anymore.
Appearance: Standing at around 5ft 6 Kestrel manages to seem imposing regardless of the height of those around her. When she wants she makes her presence well known, she can be quite intimidating with her staring grey eyes. But for the most part her simple attire and quiet but purposeful stride let her rome unnoticed by those she has no inclination to speak with.
When she left her family she cut her nut brown hair short for convenience sake while traveling, and though she might not readily admit it, an element of defiance was definitely present. She usually runs her hand through it while thinking to herself.
Her pale skin is soft and smooth but is often tinged with a deep red at her cheeks from blushing.
She tries to hold herself well in company, even when the urge to fade into the background presents itself. On her own she leans more toward looking inconspicuous. Usually seen with her arms crossed and a slight frown she doesn't appear to be very approachable. But this is more of a defense mechanism on her part, she's afraid of attracting too much attention and making a mistake.
Her movements are well placed, though this grace did not come naturally, she had to work on her fluidity. In doing so she thought she would be able to present herself better.
Due to her almost continuous wandering her already slim frame became toned with strong muscles. Though she had strength in her body she was not at all masculine, her femininity remained distinctly present in her well formed curves, her angular heart shaped face, high cheekbones and mocking smile.
Personality: Kestrel is naturally quite a shy and nervous person but through years of practice she has created an external appearance of self confidence and self assurance. She tries very hard to believe that she is this braver and to that end is very stubborn with herself.
Around people at first she is very quiet, silently trying to understand them without any interaction (she usually feels uncomfortable starting a conversation). But when she feels comfortable enough to relax with someone this is is when her real confidence shines through. It's at times like these that she can express herself more clearly and genuinely, often surprising herself in the process.
Kestrel is strong willed and stubborn when she believes she's right, even if she'd only be brave enough to tell a few people she trusts exactly what that belief is.
She does, however, have an unfortunate limit of patience for those she sees as beneath her, perhaps because of long periods spent on her own. But she is very conscious of that fault because of her innate ability to discern how others are feeling. She has never held a position of authority, but from her experiences travelling on her own she has grown accustomed to trusting her intuition and therefore not tolerating anyone else's judgment. It's not very particular to any particular kind of person, just those who happen to think differently from her at the time, she starts to look down on them a little. It's one of her major faults.
The years of rearing and handling runnerbeasts have strengthened Kestrel's talent for reading body language fluently. From watching and understanding runners she has learned how to watch and understand people. She always tries to be aware of her surroundings, focusing on those in her immediate presence.
This then gives her an advantage to manipulate them, and unfortunately she sometimes does. She has used someone's emotions against them more than once to fuel her own self-indulgent agenda.
But lately she's been trying to curb that emotional blackmail because she has become ashamed of it. She now tries to hide her more ruthless side and use her empathy to connect with people better as she feels much like an outcast and not worthy of companionship.
She feels like she needs someone to put her trust in because she's finding it hard to trust herself.
*Side Note* Would it be ok for her to shorten her name if she impresses? K'trel?
Reason: Kestrel would inevitably shorten her name for two main, almost contradicting reasons, that may only make sense to her. She would both want to stand out from the norm and yet blend in more with the group.
She would relish the idea of being different from the other women at the Weyr as she inwardly sees them as a threat. She's never had much interaction with women as she has spent most of her life around animals and the men handling them. But the more times she spends with her own gender the more it frightens her to think how attracted to them she is. She therefore would want to seperate herself somehow from them and shortening her name would link her more closely to men, whom she feels more comfortable around.
That would be the second reason, to feel more at home with her weyrmates as the majority of them would have their honorific names. It would give her a better feeling of closeness within the group, like she fitted in easier.
Hobbies/Skills:
~ Really good with animals, especially runners.
Pets: She previously owned a runnerbeast named Brenin.
History: Kestrel was born and raised in a small cothold in the south. She spent her childhood working on her father's farm with the herdbeasts and runners. As a child she was very wild, loving the outdoors and often using it as an escape from people. She would climb trees, swim in rivers and generally just run around the fields all day. It wasn't that she had a great appreciation for the wilderness, it was more that she saw it as a challenge. A challenge that she intended to meet at every available opportunity. She knew if she practiced hard enough that she could be just as good at swimming as the young boys in the hold, just as good at running and even better at hunting wherries. They used to race eachother down the fields and if she didn't win she would push the winner for a rematch. The boys weren't fazed by her constant need to prove herself as they were very much the same, always fighting to be on top, she was accepted as one of them.
The man and woman who had raised her as there own were not her true parents and the moment she found this out she convinced herself that she didn't belong with them anymore. To their great sorrow she began traveling soon after that with her runner Brenin and has since avoided speaking to anyone about her parentage. Kestrel had felt that she needed to get away, to break out and start again. So she did the only thing that felt right, she took Brenin and walked into the wilderness. She was good with runners, always had been. She began wondering now if her real father had some talent with beasts, it comforted her to think that maybe they shared this connection.
She traveled towards Refuge Weyr in the hopes living close to the great beasts of Pern. She made money along the way using her skills with animals, helping farmers with stubborn herdbeasts and tradesmen with young unruly runners. As she moved around she was watching for clues as to who her parents had been. She always looked at people directly (regardless of how intimidating that may seem), wondering if there was a likeness between them. Maybe her parents were still alive and would recognize her? Maybe she would see a part of herself in someone else, a sibling perhaps? But this wasn't her primary focus, it was something she did now almost automatically. Kestrel is still quite confused about how she feels towards her real parents who abandoned her and the people who adopted her became her parents. But more importantly she needed to put all of her energy into getting to the weyr safely.
But as the months dragged on to get by Kestrel was eventually forced to sell Brenin causing her great distress as she had grown up with him and loved him dearly. She has never really gotten over the loss of her companion. When she eventually reached the weyr she was upset, lonely and exhausted. Being asked to stand at the next hatching did very little to improve her overall state as she felt so disconnected from reality after everything that had happened to her so recently.
