Raelan was dressed in short sleeve tan shirt and brown leather pants both of which had seen better days. He sat on one of the benches as he looked down to see the empty hatching sands and sighed it had been the second time that he had been left standing. The candidate was getting older now at the age of fifteen he had only four more turns and he would be too old. His sigh was loud as he just looked out wards at the empty sands and wondered when the queen would rise again. It would probably be around another six months to a turn and yet he hoped with the legendary thread that she might rise more frequent. He had read that in olden days in the time of thread queens would rise frequently turns before to supply enough dragons. Raelan's life was little better then a drudge and had the customary upbringing of a weyrbrat. The parents thought he should think about just being satisfied in his current station in life yet he wanted more then that. A lean back against the bleacher seat behind him and he sighed because he didn't care what color it happened to be. The other candidates had always wanted some color yet it made no difference to him. It could come out with polka dots it didn't matter to him. His dragon would belong to him and no one else yet he wondered if he even had what it took. A dragon knew things that he did not and he had to wonder if he had what it took to be a dragon rider. His desire to fight thread and have a better life then just put his head in his hands as the sun was setting.

That was that. She had found it! Wait till the others saw how intelligent she really was! She found it and now she would share the way with the others. Her joy at finding the secret passage to the Hatching Sands out weighed the fear of getting caught walking in places where she was not permitted to be. Crawling through the small gap that looked like it was still part of the rock wall which surrounded the cavern she stretched first her long slender arms then her legs. Then having gotten herself together she made three cartwheels on the now cool Sands.
After a few excited movements she realized suddenly that she was not alone. Who was it? She thought peering across the sands towards the Stands. There was a young man leaning against the bleachers. Seirsha’s curiosity would not be quenched easily. He looked familiar and was probably Weyr bred if he did. Must be someone who was left Standing this time around. Those were generally the types of people who dwelled in the Hatching Caverns. Seeing as she had nothing better to do now that she had found the oh so awesome passage, she decided to see why he was sulking instead of making assumptions. This course of action however was against her better judgment since she was often right on the money when it came to these sorts of things.
Still, she had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Knowledge was power after all. “Hello there.” She called out as she skipped across the Sand towards the Stands. “You know people aren’t supposed to hang around the Sands after Hatchings. Unless you’ve got permission of course.” She smiled and went on in a tone that was sweeter than a bubbly pie. “Momma would ground me for a sevenday if she knew I was here.”
A short pause came over her as she climbed up to the Stands from the Sands. Within a moment she was in front of the other person. Looking around to make certain there was not anyone else here she added. “What are you doing here?” The emphasis was on the ‘are’ and not on the ‘you’ making the question sound more like one said by a curious eleven turn old rather than a snooping adult.

Raelan heard a voice then saw a young girl come near him then said, "Well shortie I'll take that for thought," as he brushed the little girl off. He figured she was one of the weyrbrates and didn't give it much thought. The little girl was cute though and seemed to try to give him advice. His thoughts wondered back to the sands he said, "I'm just thinking," not wanting to broadcast his thoughts to a little girl. A manly attitude he kept his thoughts to himself and then nodded at the girl for a moment before asking, "What are you doing out here," with a eyebrow raised?
He wasn't one to really care what the local weyrbrates we're up too however one had to keep a eye on one. Raelan had lost a few things the last few turns to the little sneaks and he smiled at her. The young candidate sighed figuring he had another six months before the queen would rise again. His hopes that there would be a larger clutch to increase his chances. In his mind it mattered not what color because each color had a good point to them.
His own thoughts however went to the wondrous brown dragons that seemed to have everything stamina and intelligence. Raelan thought that would be a good combination for him or even a lady green dragon. The green dragons we're beautiful too as he just sighed with folded arms leaning against the bleachers. "It was a good hatching," said Raelan as he just assumed that it was because his dragnet simply hadn't been born yet.

((Sorry but I couldn’t help laughing. When he say’s I’m just thinking it makes me think of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. “…I’ve been thinking… A dangerous pastime… I know. “)
Seirsha grinned. “I’m not THAT short for my age.” She said with an ironic laugh staring at the older boy. What really would bring him down here. He was not interesting enough to her to even be of much entertainment value. She’d be better off bothering one of the others and making them come see what she had found. A good number of them could cram into that space come Hatching time. “What are you thinking about?”
Her eyes lit up at his question. “Oh I’ve been exploring. The Weyr has many, many secrets. You just have to go round and look for them.” The blonde girl wondered if he would believe her little partial truth. She was on the Sands and no one was allowed on those without permission. Her Momma was going to wallop her when she found out. She rethought that, IF her Momma found out. Something she would have to get this young man to do was not to go blabbing. She hated blabber mouths. “Don’t go telling on me either. Then you’ll have a bad reputation of being a blab.”
“All Hatchings are good. As long as there are new dragon we have hope. That’s what Momma always says. I like seeing the new ones find their person. It must be wonderful, feeling like you are part of something else.” Seirsha guessed this boy had issues with not having found his. “Likely Aeriath will fly again soon. She’s been flying closer and closer together. Momma says Thread is going to fall. She says Queen’s fly more and lay more when they do as it gets close to Thread.” Seirsha was trying to cheer the rather depressing boy up.
She had a long time till they would let her stand. Not that she minded waiting. Plenty of time to study people and places and things. She had so much more to do in this world. And what if she did not find a dragon to suit her? Well then she still had the Pack. Friendship was forever too. Maybe that’s what this boy needed. He needed to meet some more Candidates. “My big brother Ledesein is a Candidate too. You might see him around here and there. He was sad after this Hatching too. Especially when those boys from the Holdless impressed. Big shock to his big ole ego.”

Raelan looked at the little girl and smiled she was something else. She was full of spunk though it was not unusual for the offspring of dragon riders. The kids grew up with the dragon riders around them and had no fear the smiled he said, "I promise won't say a thing,". She was a cute little thing and couldn't believe that he was thinking such a thing. He thought about what she was saying and smiled it was true the queen would fly again soon. She would lay more eggs and it would be more chances he just smiled at that.
The girl was telling everything on her older brother then he asked, "So your brother didn't impress either," with a questioning look on his face. It made him feel better that he hasn't been the only one to impress that day because it seemed everyone else was impressing. Raelan had been left standing two times and hoped that at the next one that he would impress. When he smiled at her a final time then he looked around then said, "I could see you someday impressing a great green or a gold because your very independent,". She would no doubt impress with that personality and then looked ahead.
The candidate realized there would be more chances at later hatchings. He didn't care what color just wanted to impress and then smiled at her for a moment. "So short stuff going to the hatching feast," asked Raelan as he looked at her? The young man had no intention of going because it reminded of him too much of failure. When he smiled at her then just looked ahead there would come a day when it was his turn.

The girl was not as sweet as she might seem. In a much more forcefull voice she said, “Swear. Swear on the life of your future dragon that you will not speak a word about this.” Her eyes were intense. She was not Seirsha the weyrbrat in that moment. Instead she was Glow of the Brat Pack. He would do this or suffer the consequences. Once she was certain he was taking her seriously she settled her gaze on the Sands.
“No he didn’t. He was upset about it too cause of those boys impressing. Personally I don’t think he stands much chance of ever impressing.” She shrugged as if it did not matter to her. If she seemed a bit rude it was only that she was honest. Her brother, despite his good qualities did not seem the type to her that would do well on a dragon.
Seirsha did not need him to tell her she would impress. She had no reason to think she would not. “I am going to impress. Not because I’m independent but cause I’m clever.” And she meant cleverer than either of the boys. She was not going to be popping out babies all the time like her mother either. Babies were loud, boring and needy. Much like her brother.
Raising her left brow at his calling her short stuff, she replied. “Mother does not think it fitting for us to attend till we’re old enough to handle all the excitement.” The former meant no to most people but not to Seirsha. If she could sneak out and go she would. The question was if she would be able to pull the wool over her mother’s eyes.

"Well, little one I wouldn't be surprised if you impress gold one day," said Raelan with a smile at the young girl. She had spunk and would be perfect for something very special one day. "You'll be something someday alright," said Raelan as he breathed in the air and realized as people started to clean up the egg fragments it was definatley getting late. "We better get going to the hatching feast want to get some good food," said Raelan as he plastered a smile across his face to try to look happy for the new weyrlings. He would be happy for them there was no reason to ruin their good day.
He would have his chance one day and would even more worth it because he had waited a long time for it. "So you want to go get something good to eat," asked Raelan to the little girl and smiled? The weyrbrates we're something else and could almost bet that she would impress one day with her confidence. "I'm sure they'll have sweets or something," said Raelan knowing there was always delicious food at those events because he had been to two over the the recent turns.
