Laure
There was some hesitation as the young Holdless woman entered the Sands following the other Candidates. What was she there for? She had not actually been Searched. Reminding herself this was a new experience and perhaps she should take life by the horns and tell it where to go. So putting a brave face on, since she had only grown up hearing about horrible deaths at Hatchings, she walked where the other girls were standing. Recognizing Lyndel, she stood next to the Haven bred girl. Then it started. A great Bronze was first to show up and by means of snapping at his green sister, insisted on Impressing first. She was happy to see that he found a lifemate with the boys, though she did not know Rinkin, now R’kin.
While she was watching the green she heard a shocked gasp run through the crowd and looked up at the Stands. What in the name of Faranth’s Golden Shell was her brother doing here?! Not only was he being escorted but it seemed he had managed to Impress from the Stands. Dear me, she thought wondering how her dragon hating brother was going to take this. His blue did not seem to be the pushover type so perhaps Sorlen had found his match. Fenrith, she would later know to be his name, had freed her brother from prison. Perhaps he should be thanking the dragonet.
Having been distracted by her brother she missed the green impressing to Jared. She was a pretty thing, pity she had not wanted a girl. At that moment another green impressed this time to one of the girls far away from her. Well at least greens were impressing to women. They were all just as picky as the Bronze was. Most of the subsequent Hatchlings took a good deal of time thinking over the best match for them while only one of them impressed a girl. It was to be expected that there would be more men on dragons then women. Still everytime a dragon impressed someone else she doubted once more why she was on the Sands.
The moment many of the girls had waited for with the Hatching of the Gold Egg. Laure watched in complete shock as three girls were dead not even a minute after the Hatchling left her shell. The carnage continued as one more girl was slashed and another killed. The Queen was headed her way but she did not fear the Queen, she was in too much a state of shock to feel anything. This was nothing new to Laure. How long had it been since she had felt joy, or sadness or pain or love? It had to be Turns and Turns hence. She had come to this Hatching alone and would likely leave alone because she was not ready to let anyone in to the guarded keep that was Laure’s heart.
As the Queen came toward her and Lyndel she froze. It was as if seconds were as long as a candlemark, as the Queen slowly fell, landing on her and Lyndel. She felt a couple of her bones snap. Water came to her eyes automatically and a scream of pain. And then, everything went black.

This Hatching was going to be a waste of those crazy Weyrfolks time. He certainly had better things to do, like plotting his escape. As he watched the reaction of the crowd to Krestanovith’s appearance, he realized the dragon was a Bronze. A little half grown punk of a Bronze. He wondered how Sorlen was faring watching this and apparently looked over at just the right moment because soon all eyes were on Sorlen. A dragon impressed him? Should he just kill Sorlen now and help him end his life with honor or should he let the other Holdless kill him. Geoff was not too big on the whole killing part of his life. Could he do it if he absolutely had to, yes. Did he absolutely have to right now? No. So he should let Sorlen live.
The shock that he now felt from Sorlen’s impression left him a bit numb and up to the Hatching of the Queen he paid very little attention. As the Queen appeared though, he saw the evil of dragons. She killed three girls immediately and thought nothing of it. Then she turned around and sliced a girl. Another girl she fell onto and killed. His eyes were wide at the wreckage she had made of the Hatching Sands. And girls wanted to die for that? He would never understand. The thing was vicious. As she fell onto two more girls his eyes squinted. Was that Sorlen’s sister? Well good, she got what she deserved. Death by Dragon.
He was not happy to see the Queen was done. After all he had just collected tons of evidence that dragons were evil, especially Queens. Looking down as a little green gently nudged her rider, he saw something else too. He’d felt that before. He could see from the girl’s face what the emotion was she felt. He missed that feeling. It was something almost everyone in the world desired to have.
He had forgotten why he wanted to feel it, only that he wished that someone still cared about his well being. Not one of the Holdless allowed themselves that sort of feeling. It was a method to protect themselves from loss but to the thirteen turn old he felt slightly bereft. Maybe dragons could give people something so special that people risked dying for it. He was not prepared to risk his life. He did not need that feeling, not at all. So he watched as the last egg revealed two blue dragons. Twin dragons? Was that even possible? Did it ever happen before? He looked at the Weyrfolk who again seemed to be confused by what had just happened.
A very strange Hatching indeed. First the darker of the nearly identical dragonets impressed. The lighter seemed unimpressed by the choices he was presented. The multi-faceted eyes looked up at him and he suddenly felt a wave of all those feelings he said he did not need. Maybe he did need them, a little. G'off, why are you up there? I’m so hungry. Food now. Food food food food food. Food? Come down there? He looked at the people guarding him and smiled quite a mischievous smile. “His name is Danuth!” He shouted as he had seen the other Impressed do and got out of his seat. With the lithe agility the boy was known for he slid over the wall separating the Sands from the Stands.
What was he doing?!! Oh silly G’off, you don’t need to fight dragons to feel pride. You can fight more important things. “What about all those dead girls? They have families.” Elynth is clumsy and large but not mean. He would come up with more of an argument later because debating with Danuth right now while feeling the panging in his gut made him unable to focus on much else.
