Character Info:
Name: Denkin
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Rank: Holdless / Warrior
Family:
Mother – Darsha
Father – Tieran
Brother – Geoff – Played by HG
Any family beyond this, Denkin has not bothered to know or keep track of. In fact he really could have cared less that he had a brother, but the pest found him and seems content to now fill his life with nonsense jokes.
Appearance:
A large man is an understatement. Denkin is a giant and spotting him in the crowed of holdess is an easy task for several reasons, his size only being one of them. Standing a good 6’5” and weighing in at nearly 240 lbs of muscle, it is no surprise that the holdless have learned to not cross his path, especially when his temper flares. The body of a man who works out daily, seeing him without his shirt on will easily deter you from picking a fight if his size didn’t.
A man of many scars, Denkin holds his own fair share and probably a few more. Then again, for his age he has also seen his fair share of fights and more. Rope burns adorn his wrists while several knife slashes cover his thighs from different fights so that the older scars are covered by newer ones. His chest also holds a long, jagged scar from a knife he had been unable to defend from while bound. Denkin’s back… well let’s just say it is the worst of them all and it is because of his back that only the strongest of women have the stomach to approach him for a nights company.
Beyond his size and scars, his last most distinguishing feature is his hair and Inkings. His hair is long, reaching the middle of his back despite being kept in twists that would have been called dreadlocks on earth. Often the mass is bound back with a cord, but when he is resting or in a place he considers safe for the time being, it is not uncommon to see the twists let down. Denkin has grown a fond habit in being inked. His first inking he had received in memory of his sister, taken and by the dragon riders and allowed to be killed by the young queen. It was a small mark on his neck which can be seen in the pictures above. Others have followed, either to mark fallen comrades or as tokens to remember respected foes.
Personality:
A man who seems born to brawl, Denkin is a prime example why many people see the Holdless as ruthless savages who wish nothing but pain and suffering on others. If someone pisses Denkin off, they quickly know it because a fist is soon flying their way. He has a short temper and little like for the nonsense of other people.
The only one who seems partially safe from his wrath is Geoff, the boy who claims to be his brother. Even after a turn and a half Denkin could not tell you why he puts up with the boy, nor could he tell you how many times he has picked up the kid and bodily tossed him just to get the kid away from himself. Perhaps it truly is family ties, or perhaps it is because the hardened warrior named Denkin might just have a softer side. Denkin refuses to admit to either, however.
When it comes to the idea of fighting alongside the women of the holdless, Denkin does not truly have a say for or against them. He is not a woman-hater, he is a Weyr-Hater. The women he fights alongside are those who have proven their worth in combat. As long as they stay out of the way of his sword and fight for the cause, then he shall remain to have respect for them.
A man to hold a grudge, it is little wonder he has also held onto his hatred for the Weyrs for so long and how strong it remains. Each step he moves closer to confronting another dragonrider, the more fury you will find in his swing and the more lust for blood you will find in his eyes. He has watched too many people go hungry because they have given full tithe to the Weyrs out of fear of losing the ‘protection’ they provide with suitable tithes.
Hobbies/Skills: Hand to Hand Combat, Swordsmanship.
Pets: None
History: Born in one of the cotholds under the watchful eye of Haven Weyr, Denkin was born into a family that already whispered about the ridiculous tithes the Weyr demanded. So long ago people had followed the Weyrs south, blindly believing that they still needed their protection, but it was slowly becoming clear that they did not follow the Weyrs to salvation, but rather slavery.
While the Dragonriders lived a comfortable life, pampering their beasts and themselves alike, the simple folk in the cotholds slaved in the hot southern sun over their fields and own beasts of burden simply hoping to get enough from their crop to have some left over after the Dragonriders took their share. It was unfair and crude; simple slavery.
While Denkin’s family whispered behind closed doors, his older sister still believed that it could change through peaceful acts. She felt she could show the Weyr what they were doing wrong and simply talk to them to change the world. It was because of her belief in peace that she accepted the offer to stand for the queen dragon – what better way to change the Weyrs than by doing it as their peaceful leader.
Denkin learned to begin to hate the word peace.
While his sister spent her time at the Weyr, Denkin and his family began to change things their own way. They taught him first to be a lookout while he was younger as they stole their food back from the Tithe trains. A few guards had died, but it was a small price to pay for his family and many others to have food to eat through the winter. Denkin was nine turns old when he watched his first murder done at the hands of his father.
It was shortly after Denkin turned 10 that word came back to their small cothold that his sister had died on the hatching sands. Her wounds caused by the young queen had been too great to stop the bleeding and her blood darkened the white sand beneath. The blue rider who saw fit to tell them of her fate was lucky his dragon was nearby as Darsha, Denkin’s mother, held the boy back even as his father got in every last punch he could before the dragon retaliated.
Needless to say, it was after the blue dragon left with his rider that Denkin’s family became wanted by the Weyr – nobody could assault a dragonrider and go unpunished. The three fled into hiding among the Holdless. Over the turns, Denkin and his parents trained, becoming very good at what they do. Stealing back from the Tithe trains soon became only a minor part of what they did. His mother spread the words of the Holdless and their belief while Denkin and his father helped the holdless leader, Riverton devise and execute the attack on Haven Weyr.
Denkin had never felt a prouder day than when they were able to attack Haven and kill so many of the beasts and their riders. It seemed like his life was finally meaning something and he had even taken a moment to stand upon the sands where his sister’s blood had been spilled. He had helped to kill the queen who had killed her and while his promise was now fulfilled to revenge her, he couldn’t help but feel he should continue. People were in slavery to these Weyrs and until the Weyrs were serving the people, Denkin would still have work to do.
