Many many Turns ago dragonmen served the people as protectors from the deadly silver strands known as Thread. Over time their numbers decreased as they had every Interval. The dragons always came back as did the brave men and women who rode them. This time was different. At first the Dragonriders were certain Thread would come even after two hundred Turns. The Queens did not lay more eggs but small clutches.
Eventually, the Lord Holders known for their greed and longing to rule Pern without the dragonmen, were not convinced Thread would be coming back. Three hundred Turns had passed and there was no record of a long Interval. So it was that the Dragonriders were banished from the Northern Continent to dwell alone in the South. Another hundred Turns passed (current Turn 1258) and no sign of the dragons or their riders remained except in teaching songs sung by Harpers.
Had they left Pern to fend for itself? Were they gone forever?
As gloomy as that idea is the next is harder to bear. The Holds are now on the brink of Civil War. Thread believed to be legend by most Holders is well on its way, creating dust storms in High Reaches and the northern parts of Telgar. Though not all of the Holds believe this to be true Telgar, High Reaches, Igen, Nerat and Keroon have joined forces and are about to embark on a journey to the Southern Continent to search for the Dragonriders. Who could fault them for their ancestor's mistakes?
Many other Holds, not so pleased with this idea, are prepared to go to war over the issue. They are unaware that the mission is already underway. Beyond the white shores of the Southern Continent lay their destiny.

The Dragonriders of Pern, after being banished to the Southern Continent split into two Weyrs from the six original Weyrs. Fort, Igen and Benden formed Refuge Weyr. High Reaches, Telgar and Ista formed Haven Weyr. Refuge Weyr is the Weyr we are playing here. They have a strong dislike for the North and are a hardened people both emotionally and physically. They scrape out a hard existence relying on their own population for food and goods.
Weyrwoman Raelwyn has formed a special Guard unit which helps to guard the Weyr's many farms and other things that cannot be seen overhead because of the dense forests. They communicate via Firelizards like their own walkie talkie system.
Dragons here are much the same as they were in the North. They still train and do the normal things. Unfortunately the Queens rise sporadically, sometimes not for Turns. Transferring riders from Haven to Refuge and vice versa happens more frequently now than it used to in an effort to increase new blood. Inbreeding is something they fear. Now more than ever the Dragonriders of Pern are at risk of becoming extinct.
A Note: The South is populated by the descendent's of those related to the dragonriders and the people who worked at the Weyrs. All cotholds in the South are beholden to either Refuge or Haven. The people of the South are protected from Felines, Holdless and other dangers by the Weyrs and feel a familial type need to help the Weyr as it helps them. They also feel a great amount of loyalty and honor for the Weyr and most of all the dragons.
