Character Info:
Name: Toyi
Age: 25
DOB: 1234
Gender: Female
Rank: Wingrider
Family: none
Appearance:
Toyi is a tall woman, standing at just a hair shy of 6'. Her appearance of being tall is even more noticeable when she does something silly like piling all of her hair up on the top of her head. But she seems to like to do that when she isn't actively performing in Wing duties. Her build does not help the appearance of being tall, either. Everything about her is long. Her legs are long, bearing a little shape to them, but not much. Her torso is long, with not much flare to her at all. Her waist is smaller than her hips, but her hips aren't fleshed out enough to really make that terribly noticeable. She does have a decent rack, but again it is not enough to lessen her tall appearance or make her appear topheavy. Her shoulders are broad, for a woman, and her arms are just as long as the rest of her anatomy. Even her neck is long, made more apparent every time she takes her hair off of it.
Her face often has a thoughtful cast to it. Her eyebrows match her hair color almost exactly, situated over brown eyes. Her nose is long and straight. Toyi's hair is the only part of her that seems to have any breadth to it. Long, dark, and slightly wavy, it fans out around her shoulders when she allows it to simply be. She has volumes of the stuff, and it lets that be known every time it is loose. However, being a rider, she usually keeps it contained in one fashion or another. When she is flying, it is usually braided and wrapped around her head under the helmet. If she is attending a social function, she usually has it done up. For her, she usually only lets it just be when she is alone and not doing anything.
Toyi doesn't have much of a thing for clothes and only keeps a sparse few sets. One for working in, one for special occasions, and one for lounging around her weyr in. Only the special occasion garb breaks from the dark earthy tones of the rest of her garments, being a brighter color of a light red. It is also the only dress she owns. Everything else is trouser and tunic.
Personality: Toyi is almost as confusing as her dragon is, and maybe sometimes more so. At times she can be so intently focused on something that it's enough to make people squirm. Especially since that focus is applied most intently upon the people around her. If she's talking to someone, that person has all of her attention. Her gaze never wanders from them, in a most unnerving stare. And at other times, she can be almost completely cold, never looking at anyone and acting as if they don't even exist. At seemingly random times she won't answer something said to her, frequently frustrating those around her. Which in turn frustrates her because she doesn't understand why they are getting upset. Over what?
She loves to sing, though she won't do it around anyone human. Or, she won't knowingly sing around anyone human. The only being she will sing for is Alyrath, who adores listening to her rider's voice. Toyi has a lovely voice indeed, and can manipulate it very precisely to certain levels of note. But she tends to sing a tad bit lower than any Harper would suggest that she do. Toyi just loves the way lower notes roll across her throat, and how they feel in her chest. She also loves deep sounds, like dragon rumbles or the heavy beat of a large drum. Any sound that can be felt intrigues her.
Between her strange methods of interaction with people and some of her other habits, Toyi tends to be somewhat of a loner with not a lot of friends. But this is a prevalent trend in her life and doesn't think it's terribly strange or unnatural. She's quite content to be by herself for long periods of time, especially since Alyrath is always there with her in her mind if not physically. She adores her dragon and would probably not survive if something were to happen to the beast. This is not to suggest she is antisocial or does not like people. She is just as happy to be with people, but they often times confuse her with the communication gap that frequently forms.
Hobbies/Skills: Not really particularly skilled in anything, Toyi has minimal experience in most Weyr activities. She likes to sing, but will not sing for others. Her true skill is in observing everything around her. Not much gets past her sharp eyes.
Pets:
History: Toyi has absolutely no idea who her family is. There is no notion who she is related to or who her parents might have been … or even if she has siblings. She just has no idea. No one she knows could tell her either. She was simply abandoned to the crèche at a very young age. About the time she should have been talking. But she not only wasn't talking, she'd never uttered a sound in her life at all. Bright eyed and curious, there wasn't anything obviously wrong with her that most people could tell. Many suspected she was mute, and also suspected that this defect was why she had been abandoned mysteriously by her parents. Some people couldn't handle dealing with a child that was not normal, or were too ashamed to admit that their child wasn't normal.
It was one of the women who lived and worked with crèche children that figured out what the real issue was. Toyi was not mute, far from it. She was deaf. Completely and totally deaf, she'd never heard a sound in her life to know that she was capable of making any sounds herself. Sudden noises nearby never startled her and she often wouldn't notice if someone was talking to her if she didn't see them first. A happy child, Toyi didn't know there was anything wrong in the world. One of her favorite things to do as a young girl was to lean on the chest of the woman who had taken care of her, and feel her chest vibrate as she talked. It was just terribly intriguing to her young mind.
Because of her being deaf, and not talking for it, the other children tended to leave her alone. She didn't respond when they said anything, and certainly didn't talk in return. Many of them were creeped out by her unending silence, and stayed away from her. As this had started before she was really able to recall, Toyi didn't find it unusual at all to be by herself.
Raised by the crèche woman, Toyi didn't know that she was missing anything to be unhappy about it. By the time she was seven she finally started talking, but it was a crude sound to listen to. With help from the crèche woman, she learned to read lips and understand speech that she couldn't hear. She also eventually learned to speak in return rather than mouth the words, though that took longer and was a larger hurdle. By the time she was eleven, she was talking just like any other kid. Slowly, she integrated better with the other children, but it didn't really go very well. They didn't know she was deaf, and they would get mad when she would not answer when they spoke while she wasn't watching them. Toyi would always watch if she knew someone was talking to her, but naturally she couldn't hear anyone walking up behind her, or just randomly starting to talk. She did learn to always watch. Rare was the time where she got lost in a small area of watching. Aware of all of her surroundings, there was very little that Toyi did not see. But even being watchful, human eyes can only see in one direction at a time!
On her twelvth turn, it was time for her to start learning something to do with herself. She needed to know how to do something, some skill, to carry her through the rest of her life. Her crèche-mother tried to help her with this, but there were so many hurdles to be crossed that it was quite difficult. Because of her ability to lip-read and speak clearly in response, very few people ever caught on that she was deaf. And since her crèche-mother had never told her that she was any different from anyone else, she didn't know to tell them that she was. People assumed she could hear, and got rather upset with her quickly over what they called impertinent behavior and blatantly ignoring them. Many teachers sent her back, more frustrated than ever.
Which in turn frustrated Toyi. She had no idea what she was doing so wrong that made so many teachers declare her unfit for whatever it was she was trying to learn at the time. For turns this went on, her bouncing from one type of work to another, never managing to truly apprentice to anything. One thing she had been able to do that she had simply adored was beating the big drums that were used to communicate to the outlying Holds. The resonance of the drums vibrated her to her very bones and she loved it. That, she could hear, to some extent. It was a sensation she didn't find anywhere else. Unfortunately, while she was good at beating out messages, she would apparently blithely ignore incoming messages that she couldn't hear at all. That got her kicked out in a hurry, much to her chagrin. Her crèche-mother tried to help her, but in her old age and failing health there wasn't much she could do beyond try to be supportive and encouraging to the young girl.
At her fourteenth turn, Toyi was left bereft of any friend at all when the old woman finally lost her battle with time and expired from old age. It seemed as if she was going to be doomed to a life of a simple drudge with no education at all, stuck doing something menial like washing dishes or mopping floors. For a time this was exactly what she did until the fateful day when her whole life was upended on its ear.
Working as a drudge, she had been helping to cut up meat for a hatching that was underway. Many were working quickly, as the baby dragons were hatching at that very moment and would need feeding just as soon as they Impressed. It was in delivering another tub of meat to the edge of the sands that she happened to be at the right place at the right time to stumble across Alyrath. Newly hatched the green had been wandering the sands and creeling, knocking over a few candidates that had gotten in her way while she walked without paying much attention to where she was going. When Toyi had appeared at the edge of her awareness, delivering the meat, Alyrath had taken off at a blundering run to hurry over to the girl, happily eager to see so very much food! Toyi hadn't the faintest idea what had just happened, but she knew it was something marvelously nice. This cute little dragon had come all the way over to her and was asking to be fed … by her! And goodness, she had this nice cozy feel to her. Familiar with interacting with a few flitters, she was not surprised to be getting feelings from the dragon. What she had not expected was to hear the dragon speak to her.
Impressed completely by accident without ever having been a candidate, Toyi had double duty to learn and catch up, all while caring for the young green dragon. Unlike those around her, Alyrath figured out in a hurry that hers was Special. Locked in a prison of silence, she had no idea what the world sounded like. Alyrath set out to change that. Through the dragon's ears, Toyi became able to listen to the world, if only for short spans of time when the green concentrated on sharing.
Toyi was completely fascinated, and was even more surprised the first time she heard her own self speak, through Alyrath's ears. For weeks the two of them just listened to Toyi talking, trying out her voice and seeing what all kinds of sounds she could produce … and what those sounds felt like when she made them. Quite a few of her classmates thought she was bat crazy, and avoided her for it. But this was when Toyi started developing her love for singing, listening to her own voice through her dragon.
But in becoming aware that she was different from those around her, in that she could not hear … and in that sometimes her voice did very strange things despite her best efforts, Toyi refused to sing for anyone but Alyrath, despite the dragon's assurances that she sounded lovely. For a time she was even somewhat nervous just speaking to people. With the understanding that she could not hear, and that those around her could, she slowly began to realize why people became frustrated with her. It didn't take a genius to figure that out. She tried harder to make up for this short coming, paying even more attention to her surroundings than she had before. But this also only made her stranger in the eyes of those around her. Her intent awareness and focus on the world made them think that she was high or crazy. Despite how it might help her to explain to people that she is different, Toyi developed the opposite notion. She wouldn't tell anyone she was different, for she was afraid that it would only give them solid reason to not like her. To her mind, it was better to just try to overcome it, and try to appear normal. With this set in mind, she made Alyrath promise to not tell anyone that she couldn't hear like normal people.
Dragon Info
Name: Alyrath
Color: Green
Age: 9
Description: Alyrath is a beautiful green even if she is not a solid tone of green. Her hide is spackled in darker and lighter shades in completely irregular patterns across the whole of her hide. Instead of being a mere dark or light green all over. Instead she looks a lot like a medium tone of green laying under a deciduous tree in the shade. If she ever took a notion to go hole up in the woods and lay perfectly still, she could probably vanish into a summer's forest. For her lighter tones are a rich green but the darker tones are more of a dark forest green.
She is a green that is very well put together if a bit on the heavier side than is completely ideal for a dragon of her size and color. Stronger than some greens, she also has greater endurance than might be expected of a green. However she pays for it with less speed and slightly hampered agility in the air. Still more agile that a typical blue, she doesn't seem to mind much. She can easily fulfill the role of a green in a wing, with some slight shifts and adjustments.
Personality: Alyrath is a walking paradox of a dragon. Any given body really has no idea what they get when they walk up on her or address her, whether they are dragon or human. There are reasons for this, but as these reasons are never aired, she just appears to be slightly bipolar. Alyrath's main focus is on protecting and taking care of hers. Beginning and end. She never betrays the confidence laid upon her, and as a result, it gives her a strange reputation of her own, for no one knows why she does the things that she does, whilst she is just compensating and providing for Toyi.
As long as there is nothing going on that she has to attend to in the area of her Rider, Alyrath is a very nice gal to interact with, and can sometimes be quite talkative indeed. She does love company, despite the secrets she keeps. When things go south, however, and more of her attention is focused upon the situation surrounding Toyi, she can be quite snappish or cold shouldered. But then … who isn't when they're busy with something they view as utmostly important and they get interrupted?
Like most greens, most of Alyrath's memory is very short. Things get forgotten quickly, especially if they are of little importance. Only the really important stuff (usually pertaining to Hers) gets remembered for any length of time. Due to this, she can sometimes be a tad mystified why some of the other dragons react a little oddly to her … especially if she's already forgotten something snappy she'd said a few days ago and they haven't yet.
