Character Info:
Name: Prontin
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Rank: Drudge / Wanna-be Harper
Family:
GrandFather – Weyr Harper Ronatin – Deceased
Father – Weyr Harper Alrin – 50
Mother – Drudge Sorai – Deceased
Brother – Bluerider I’tin of Eryth – 26 (8)
Brother – Weyr Harper (in training) Filkos - 19
Appearance:
Prontin is known for her sharp features that often catch people off guard. Standing a full 5’6” she is not short for a woman, nor is she on the tall side. Instead her height lets her blend in with the crowd as long as her face is turned away. Her skin is porcelain and ivy, however, as she finds herself indoors more often than out and it is a sharp contrast to her dark brown hair.
Her sharpest features, however, is not the contrast between the tone of her skin and the color of her hair. Instead it is in the shape of her face. Long and oval, her cheeks are sharply boned and her nose, while narrow and finely shaped is also long. Her eye lashes are long and dark and her narrow eyebrows also stand out against her porcelain skin. Unlike the picture, however, her eyes are clouded over and grey – no longer holding a distinction between what was once a pupil and the whites of her eyes.
Narrow lips are a light pink, but don’t let the softness of the color fool you as they are usually pressed hard together and have no plumpness or shape to them besides the thin lines. Her hands themselves are long fingered and finely boned. Surprisingly, calluses adorn her finger tips from many candle marks handling her instruments.
When she dresses, Prontin wears clothing with soft matieral which in her case tends to be the clothes she has owned the longest. Simple patched skirts and tunics with which she can roll up the sleeves easily herself are her first choice. Colors sometimes don’t match, but it does not bother Prontin as she cannot see the colors to begin with. On the rare occasion that she be required to dress up, her mother helps her chose what to wear.
Personality:
Prontin has never truly learned to be outgoing. Very quiet as a child as she was often told to just sit and listen, she has made few friends around the Weyr. That doesn’t mean people are not nice to her, they are just simply kind and don’t usually move beyond an acquaintance. Because of this, she rarely speaks her mind or joins in conversations unless addressed directly. Of course, that could be due in part that she cannot see those involved in the conversation to tell if they are speaking with her or not.
Due to her preference to simply not speak as it makes it easier on herself and those around her who are often uncomfortable from the start, Prontin never really worked on her vocal skills like her father or brothers. She does, however, find her outlet in her music; her Violin. Often during times of celebration, Prontin will put herself in a corner and when her father needs a break from the entertainment, Prontin shows her true self through her music.
When it comes to men, she finds herself just as awkward around them as she does women and anyone not within her family. It’s not so much that she is untrusting of them, but more of the fact that she is acutely aware that she makes others uncomfortable. Every now and then she will run into someone who doesn’t seem to be bothered by her blindness and it is at those times that she finds her tongue tied and herself confused as to what should be said or done – having no good practice at it.
Hobbies/Skills: Violin is easily her favorite and best. Knows simple tunes on her father’s guitar as well and a few children songs on the pipes.
History:
Born to the Weyr Harper, Prontin was destined to live in a home filled with music. At her birth, however, neither parent could have known just how much of her life would evolve around sound and music. The baby girl named Prontin was born perfectly healthy and it was not until the child’s second turn that her big, brown eyes began to lighten in color.
At first the healer was confused, but it soon became apparent as the child began to bump into more and more things that the toddler was losing her sight. With no real explanation for it, the healer could not find a way to reverse what was happening. Perhaps there was medicine in the north, but even if there was the healer was afraid it had gone too long and the results would be irreversible either way.
And so it was that the child named Prontin was raised in a home that was always spotlessly clean despite two brothers. The less she could fall over the better. She would accompany her father to his work in the Weyr’s Classrooms where the young were taught, but she would sit in the corner and never was she asked to practice her writing. Even so, her father stressed the importance of learning the teaching ballads.
As she grew, she found things she could help her mother with, such as kneading dough in the kitchens. She was unable to master the art of skinning tubers, but she was also able to cut the simpler plants for the stews. Even so, she is often shooed out of the kitchens when there is any need for faster preparation.
In the end, it was Prontin herself who asked her father to teach her to play the violin after hearing him teach her brothers. It took a lot of patience on both ends and there were many nights both would leave the room in tears of frustration. Eventually, however, Prontin mastered the basics and began to practice on her own. It was a moment of pride and joy for the whole family and it is not uncommon to hear the sounds of a solo violin playing throughout the lower caverns.
