J'zen stalked around the small space that he would be sharing with every other weyrling for the better part of over a turn. To say that he was less than pleased was an understatement. J'zen was a man who didn't like being so close to people he didn't trust and he didn't trust easily. Sure most of the new werylings had been on the expedition team with him, but Jerezen really didn't like most of them. They had never taken him or his scrolls and parchments seriously when he had been the one they were supposed to depend on for knowledge concerning the Southern continent. How did they plan to treat him now that they were on equal footing in ignorance.
Huffing lightly, J'zen turned around and did another circuit of the weyr. Tyreth had long since stopped paying attention to His. If J'zen wanted to place the black marks on scraps of dried hide higher than people, then that was J'zen's choice. Personally, Tyreth couldn't see what mystical thrall His had with the written word, but the Blue did find the sound of His singing and playing his guitar to be most pleasant. If only J'zen sang more often, but J'zen said he only sang for those who could appreciate the beauty of his song and music.
"Tyreth, I do not like this, but you are worth it a thousand times over."
Glancing up at J'zen, Tyreth snorted.
Only a thousand times?
J'zen swatted the Blue's hide lightly and finally started to unpack the bag he had placed reverently on the furs over half a candlemark ago. Inside his wherhide bag were his fine clothes and most precious writings. One of the parchments he pulled out was the song he had been working on on the ship over. He had lost the original, but the journey through the jungle had given him ample time to rewrite and even finish it.
Looking around the room, J'zen found it was satisfactorily empty. With a flourish, J'zen swung his guitar up off the floor and into his hands and sat down on his furs cross-legged. Then he placed the parchment to the side, because he had already memorized it, and began to sing softly, strumming his guitar with the tune. As the song wore on, J'zen's voice rose in pitch and tempo. It was a rich baritone that almost bordered on tenor. All the while, Tyreth just stretched his body out and listened contentedly. Only a fool would not be able to appriciate the sound of J'zen's voice.

Osaris came into the weyrling barracks and found them mostly empty, except for a blue weyrling playing his gitar. The sounds she heard were beautiful and seemed to fill the room with sound. Even Skadyth who could normally find something to say about everythingwas for once struck silent. Skadyth who normly could find something wrong with everyone and everything (which did not make her extremly popular) could say nothing about the music. She actually liked it.
Skadyth finally spoke to Osaris, I haven't ever heard anythinglikethat before. It is, well, themost beautiful sounds I have heard.
Osaris wasn't musically talented, and she did not even have the ear for it, but like Skadyth, that did not mean she didn't appreciate a well played peice of music. He plays well doesn't he?.
Amazing isn't it that bookbound there can produce such sounds? Skadyth was back to normal, speakingexactly what she thought of people. Osaris smiled and rubbed Skadyth'shead knobs. She loved her dragon even if she had something to say about everyone.
I kind of feel sorry for him. I mean, I didn't talk to many people on the expedition, but I don't think people appreciated the fact that he was the expeditions know everything person. I think it caused him to be alienated, like my differences.
I don't care if you are different from others, it is what makes you mine and what makes you better than them. Osaris smiled warmly at Skadyth. Skadyth always knew what to say to get her out of her moods.
Still, I sort of feel sorry for him, because I know how loneliness feels.
Ah, but mine, just like you he now has someone.
Yes, I have you my dear Skadyth.
Even as they silently talked to each other, the weyrling pair listened to the beautiful music.

B’ren paused, giving his bronze dragon a slightly confused look. The bronze returned the look, wondering why his had suddenly stopped feeding him. “…was that a burp?” I don’t know what you’re talking about. “That sound you just made! It was a burp!” Zeuth only let out a metal sigh, his tail tapping impatiently on the floor waiting for B’ren to get back to work. B’ren’s eyes narrowed on his dragon, trying to figure out if Zeuth didn’t know what a burp was or was just trying to deny it. Ultimately Zeuth won the battle, B’ren muttering in frustration before he started cutting meat up again before the large and always hungry dragon.
Once done with feeding Zeuth, B’ren took a moment to talk to his foster mother and sneak a little snack out of the kitchen for himself. “Come on Zeuth, lets get ourselves moved into the barracks now. Before we get in trouble for not being there.” The bronze weyrling didn’t have a whole lot of things to get from his room, most of it was clothing. He brought along the good luck charm his foster brother Pennon and him had found (a fang from a wild feline), a small empty wooden box with some holes in it that normally held spinners or other bugs he had found, and a small tan-ish lump. Mine, what is that? And why are you taking it with you? It looks like those things you put on your feet. Socks. Only dirty.
B’ren looked at the tan-ish lump that Zeruth was asking about, looking a bit sheepish about it. “It’s not a sock. It’s suppose to be you.” He sighed a bit and stretched the lump out into its proper shape. It had a long, snake-like body and two triangles sticking out the sides that could have been wings. Two small and highly polished rocks had been sew in for eyes. “Bala sewed it. I promised her I would take it with me. And if I don’t she will know. And she may only be ten but I have taught the girl well. She will find a way to make life miserable for me. Anyways, I think its cute, she really found a way to bring out the uh color of your hide.” B’ren smirked a little and put the stuffed Zeuth-doll on Zeuth’s back, just as Bala came in to say good-bye and double check to make sure that B’ren had taken her gift. She was overjoyed to see little-Zeuthy riding on big-Zeuth and after that even Zeuth couldn’t complain about the doll.
The two walked from the Lower Caverns to the Weyrling Barracks, B’ren saying hello to most of the people they passed until he made it to the Barracks. He pushed the door open then came to a stop, both him and the bronze’s head tilted to the side a little as they listened to the music that poured out the door. There was no need for rider or dragon to tell the other to be quiet, they didn’t want to interrupt the singer. Buuut they also didn’t want to stand outside in the hall all day either. B’ren came in almost silently, he was good at being a sneak, Zeuth was as quiet as a dragonet could be, even making sure that his tail didn’t swish into anything. B’ren dropped his things onto the first bed by the door, not really caring if that actually was someone’s bed at the moment or not. B’ren finally saw who was singing, one of the guys from the North and after a moment remembered his name, J’zen. Zeuth sat down on the floor while B’ren stood there, both silent until J’zen had finished his song before B’ren clapped politely. “That was great. I don’t think we’ve had anyone here who could play that well in turns. Not since the last harper went into the forest and never came back. Poor Smilin’ Koth…”

J'zen had zoned out during his song, but Tyreth watched the new male weyrling and dragonet enter with lazy but attentive eyes. The Blue wasn't sure he liked sharing the new song, but there was no way he was going to interrupt J'zen when he was singing. Instead Tyreth merely watched them get settled in on an empty bunk and listen to His.
The Blue felt a stirring of pride. His was the one with the wonderful voice that people liked to listen to. J'zen was the one who knew how to twists words and fabricate tales that would bewitch the ears and sooth the mind. Tyreth had indeed chosen well.
As the song came to a close the new weyrling clapped, catching J'zen's attention. The Blue's rider snapped his head to the noise in surprise. There was a scowl on his face.
Tyreth, why didn't you tell me we had company?
J'zen never once ceased staring at the newcomers.
You would have stopped singing and playing.
Tyreth, feeling as if he had been properly justified in his actions, stopped paying attention to everything and yawned. He wanted to get some rest. J'zen didn't have the same luxury of ignoring their new roommates and finally addressed them.
"My thanks and condolences on your previous harper. It must have been a tragic loss."
J'zen's facial features and bland tone never changed the entire time he spoke.
"Was there anyone else who heard or were you and your partner the only one?"

B’ren nodded a bit and put a clenched hand against his chest. “Smilin’ Koth was a good man, but he should have known better then to go out alone. He didn’t have nearly the kind of voice that you do though.” Unlike J’zen, B’ren actually smiled and his tone of voice changed, sounding almost grave as he spoke of Koth but cheering up when he said how good J’zen was. He glanced around the barracks and raised an eyebrow slightly at J’zen. “Well I don’t see anyone else in here unless they’re hiding. You might have been able to hear the song playing through the walls but I’m not sure. But you’re the harper from the North aren’t you? J’zen?”
B’ren started looking around, trying to find a bed that was taken by anyone else. He finally found and started to put his things away, folding his clothing away neatly and stashing his few trinkets away before he grabbed Zeuth-doll off his dragon and tossed it onto his bed.

Ha! Nobody else here? We heard the nice music to! Go tell that boy that he must be blind, and tell the other one that he plays nicely. Skadyth told Osaris.
But what if thye don't want me intruding? The girllooked with curious eyes at her dragon.
Its less polite to sit here and pretend not to be here.
When were you for being polite?
I am for telling people things straight out and not hiding what you think.
With a sigh Osaris stood up and worked her way out of the shadows. "Um hi... Skadyth wants me to tell you that that was beautiful music."
Osaris could hear a mental sigh from Skadyth as she quoted Skadyth. Skadythwrapped her in warmth and love so as to give her the strength to talk out instead of watching passivly as things happened.

J'zen inclined his head at the new addition to his audience. Of course there were more. There were always more when he wished for solitude. The fact that the second newcomers were female surprised him. Didn't the female weyrlings have their own set of barracks? What were the two doing in the male weyr?
"I thank you for your compliment Skadyth. Oh, Osaris, if you don't mind the intrusion, but what are you doing in the male barracks?"
For the fist time since the new arrivals, J'zen showed some interest in what was going on. He even went so far as to raise an eye-brow before turning his back on the four of them and propping his guitar against his new nightstand. Then he lifted his papers off his furs and laid them gently in a drawer that would be exclusively for his scrolls. His clothes that didn't fit could always just remain in his bags.
"I believe you asked me if I was from the North, B'ren. I am. I do not tithe to any Hold though. I am strictly Harper Hall bred. If I am not mistaken, Osaris is as well. I would hazard a guess at High Reaches. Your mannerisms are distinct, and you look awfully like the descriptions I have heard of its Lady. Am I correct in my assumptions?"
To the side of him, Tyreth snorted. The small Blue was trying to get to sleep, but His kept proving to be far too entertaining.

B’ren jumped a bit hearing the girls voice and shooting her a some what dirty look. Then he gave Zueth a dirty look. Why didn’t you tell me someone was here? Especially that a girl was here! The bronze let out a mental scoff before stretching his long form out before he settled down next to the bed, curling his from limbs under himself, his tail swishing back and forth a bit. I didn't say something because she’s a girl B’renmine. You have a very bad habit of flirting with every female you come across. It’s unbecoming of us.[/i]
The bronze rider let out a grumble at his dragon’s answer. He turned his attention to Osaris, looking the girl over and listening to J’zen ask her questions. He found it slightly odd that J’zen didn’t know more about the girl since she had come from the North as well. Of course he had to remind himself that the Expedition had only spent a few months with each other and they had probably been little cliques of people that hadn’t taken the time to get to know each other very well. “Well hello there, Osaris was it? Sorry I didn’t notice you, I was distracted by J’zen’s music. Though I’m curious to know why you’re in the guys room as well. Unless you’re trying to get a look at someone changing… which sounds more like something a guy would do then a girl.”
See? I didn't do any flirting there. I even resisted saying how all she had to do was ask if she wanted to see me without a shirt.

Osaris flushed a bright red and glarred at Skadyth. We shouldn't have said anything.
The other dragons knew we were here...
Still blushing Osaris turned back to the other guys and started explaining herself, "I don't much like crowds of people, and I have never been comfortable with people..." In truth, she was less comfortable around large groups of girls then guys, but she preffered to be alone with Skadyth.
"Skadyth told me that no one was in here... And we were both tired of the girls in the barracks... and there were people in the common room... Well, we came in here... And then the music was really lovely, trully..."
If it was possible, Osaris's blush was getting deeper by the second. Her mother would have a fit if she knew her daughter had taken refuge in the guys barraks! She and Skadyth weren't particulary popular... Skadyth's comments weren't liked, and though Skadyth knew better than to say them, people could often feel what they thought about pettiness.

J'zen inclined his head and a few strands of dark hair tumbled onto his shoulder. The girl hated crowds. That was something they had in common. If Osaris had given any other reason J'zen would have probably politely kicked her out, but instead he merely shrugged and continued unpacking his things.
"Most of the beds are still unclaimed so you can sit practically anywhere. I am J'zen, but you were most likely already aware of that."
Folding back a couple of the furs so that he could crease a comfortable spot into them, J'zen sat beside his prone dragonet who had decided the bed where J'zen slept was a finer place than his couch.
"Please ignore the mess. We have not had a proper chance to tidy it up in here. Dust and debris from the previous inhabitants still clings to this place like a grimy hide."

It all seemed odd to B’ren but he had always enjoyed being around other people. It gave him a chance to be the center of attention for a little while. But he could understand that it wasn’t as much fun for other people. Well at least she had come in here when there wasn’t a bunch of people, or else stuff could have gotten rather awkward.
B’ren started to put a few of his things away, frowning slightly as he took note of all the dust. He was use to living in a clean area, mostly because his foster mother had nagged him half to death if he let things get so filthy. “Ugh the next free day we get I’m going to at least clean my area up. It could be worse though, there are some rooms deep in the Lower Caverns that haven’t been touched in years. Only time those get cleaned is if you really irk the Headwoman off. I hope the girls room is a little better then this. I’d hate to think of all you lovely women being stuck in such a messy place.”
B’ren heard the grumble from Zeuth and ignored it, giving Orsaris an easy going smile instead. He wasn’t really flirting with the girl, he was just being himself. Which meant he flirted a bit with everyone. And he was sincere about it too, most girls he knew didn’t like to live in a bunch of filth. Just because one was willing to get their hands dirty didn’t mean they wanted to sleep in a grimy dirty room. “Wonder if we’re all going to be forced to clean again or if this is like a test to see who’s willing to clean up. Or if no one knows that this place hasn’t been touched for by a rag and broom for the past few months…”

When the two guys seemed to accept her, Osaris moved to an empty bed and Skadyth moved until she could lean against hers like an oversized cat.
She personally was not good at dealing with others. She let B'zen talk, but eventually it seemed like he expected an answer out of her. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, a nervus habit, and finally spoke, "Why would you want to be stuck inside cleaning when you could be outside? Why squeal over dirt, it is only dirt and dust. It can't harm you."
Osaris had a much more down to Earth view than the other girls. She could still remember them all cleaning as soon as they saw the state of the barracks. She could still remember being given a rag and told to dust. She did it simply because she didnt' want to make a fuss.
(sorry, failpost)
