The Wher Craft
The Wher Craft itself varies greatly between each of the three WherHolds. Unlike any other craft in the North, the Wher Craft itself does not have a primary headquarters or even a Craft Master. Instead each WherHold has a different sort of leadership who make all of the major decisions for that particular WherHold. Because of this, each WherHold also conducts its business differently within its region. Training and ranks have also been found to be handed out differently among each of the WherHolds as well.
Crom WherHold
Unplayed
The first WherHold founded as a sort of Craft Hall was at Crom Hold. Crom held the highest demand for an organized way to breed Whers for the huge demand of the creatures from the Miners Craft Hall and the hundreds of cotholds throughout the region of Crom that relied on their abilities to mine the precious ore from the earth. Crom’s WherHold has never boasted less than two golden Whers and during prosperous times has even had as many as four producing queens.
Crom’s WherHold is very straightforward about the requirements to move up in the ranks of the Craft. Anyone can become an Apprentice and devote their time to the care of the WherHold and the Whers. Often times Apprentices never rise above drudge duties. The lucky apprentice who wins favor among the Masters is given a chance to bond to a Wher. Should that apprentice bond successfully, they are then considered to graduate to Journeyman Rank. To proceed to Master Rank, again the task is very straight forward. Your Wher must simply sire a healthy clutch, be it made of one egg or seven. Because of this style of ranking, it is the bronze and gold bonded who have a council to rule the WherHolds daily business.
Keroon WherHold
Unplayed
The second WherHold established was at Keroon Hold. The Beastcrafters seemed to feel left out at having their hand in the Whers breeding and raising. Believing they could produce healthier and stronger Whers through selective breeding programs much like they do with their herdbeasts and runners, several Beastcraft men and women began the second WherHold. This WherHold keeps a much more traditional Craft ranking system and one person can raise to Master rank by increasing their knowledge of Whers and not necessarily bonding to one.
Because of the much more traditional style to the Craft of the WherHold at Keroon, this particular WherHold actually has a ‘Craft Master’ though he only conducts the business of that particular WherHold and not all three. Interesting fact to note is that Keroon’s WherHold Craft Master is unbonded to a Wher of any color. Instead he keeps a feline.
Fort WherHold
Played
The newest WherHold established by demand of the region more than profitable gain, the Fort WherHold has a balance mix of both ranking systems and craft. Anyone can become an Apprentice Wher Crafter at Fort WherHold and it is through either Apprenticeship or your pocketbook that you become a Candidate for the Wher Eggs. To become a Journeyman you must not only prove to have a certain amount of knowledge on the Wher Species, but to also have bonded successfully to a Wher.
After that, advancement is not based off color or breeding such a Crom, but rather the further development of knowledge and understanding of the Wher Species as well as the devotion to it. There are as many blue and green bonded pairs who have risen to Master Rank within Fort WherHold as brown and bronze.
By tradition, the leadership of the Wherhold has copied the records of the Weyrs. Leadership tended to fall upon the gold Wher who’s current bonded had the most experience within the WherHold. Naturally, as the Wher tends to outlive the Handler, the ‘senior’ position would shift between gold Whers. It was working well, until both of their gold Whers died within a fire that took a third of the WherHold. With a gold from Crom as their only queen, they are hesitant to hand over complete leadership to that Wher’s Handler. For the time being, it is being run by the most senior members of the WherHold.
