The sun was still hanging over one side of the weyrbowl, a few major stars just beginning to show their distant sparkle in the sky as dusk slowly began to envelop the far horizon. It was dinner time and many weyrfolk had already made their way to the dining hall.
Around one table, T'shiro sat with his brother J'ngi to his right and T'gir and Kyo approached from accross the table. Setting down trays of food, T'shiro and J'ngi both stood to greet the Brownrider and Shield member.
With a curious eye on Kyo, T'shiro offered a hand across the table, speaking to T'gir, "Who's this? I'm T'shiro of Crucluith. Shadow Wing. Good to meet you."
"J'ngi of Sinreth. Pyralis Wing."
Each of the men shook hands while T'gir introduced the Shield Member. "This is Kyo. A cousin on my father's side. Quite the swords-master apparently. T'shiro, you two would certainly find a lot to talk about."
Kyo regarded T'shiro with fresh enthusiasm. "Too bad there's not much compatability between our schedules or I'd invite all of you to join me sometime during practice so that we could have some fun."
The Bronzerider wasn't about to let Kyo back down from that offer, "I bet we can manage to find a time to get together. I look forward to that!"
With smiles, they each sat down, beginning to occupy themselves with their meals and light coversation.
The hour drew on, and Kyo had been entertaining them with outrageous stories of training exercises and scouting missions on the outskirts of the Weyr. Chuckles and laughter errupted across the table several times at his tale-telling and the amicable banter that ended up sprouting between him and the outgoing J'ngi; but eventually, as it always did, conversation about the Dragonshield took on a heavier tone.
As he continued, Kyo's voice was accepting over the matter at hand, but that didn't mean he had to be pleased by it. Nevertheless, he shared his thoughts, “...and that is the reality we face every day in the Dragonshield. I don't know if I can speak for all of the other members or not, but I chose to take this position so that dragonriders don’t have to.
"Dragonriders shouldn’t have to dirty themselves in combat or worry about such threats. You guys are already worrying about what's falling from the skies, trying to protect us.
My real worry is that once this is all over, someone has to be there to accept the inevitable finger of blame for all the bloodshed. When the holdless are laid to rest and the world goes in search of its next conflict as it always does, those outside the weyr will be able to point to us, the Dragonshield. Even now, as it stands, there are those in the holds who greatly resent the Weyrs. Given the chance, they could take that very opportunity to bend the truth of the conflict with the holdless to their own context in order to bring about their own will.
"But if we maintain the Dragonshield as the face, the source of all villainy within the Weyr. It is better to have their eyes turned hatefully upon us instead of on the dragonriders. It will be easier to deal with their scorn in that way, when the political climate turns against us. In the end, it will be easier to make Martyrs of the Shield, even if we only go into exile.
Maybe that’s just another way we are able to protect dragonriders,...by shouldering the blame for all of the killing that will take place. My only request to you, as dragonriders, would be for you to be very careful about how you use force in any way...unless it's against thread.”
Having sat back in his chair adopting a contemplative expression, T'gir mused over his cousin's words, being drawn into deep thought over the matter. Kyo had a point.
J'ngi on the other hand seemed a bit perplexed by Kyo's certainty that such a thing would ever happen, and rather displeased, "Do you really think it's possible? The Weyrs would never give up on the Shield like that."
Then he turned his eyes on T'gir, obviously disturbed by the thought that any of the Shield would be cast off in such a way.
