Character
Name: Kassirin (Kass-ur-in) aka Kassy
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Rank: Apprentice
Emphasis: Weapons Crafting
Sexual Orientation: Hetro
Family:
Father – Zakilor Master Blacksmith 52- Deceased
Mother - Rilissa House Wife 46 - Deceased
Oldest Brother - Todorin Member of the D-Shield 26 - Deceased
Middle Brother - Matlan Journeyman Blacksmith 21 - Deceased
Youngest Brother - Osilar Apprentice blacksmith - 8 Turns
Appearance:
Though Kassy has rather long hair most don’t notice because she often ties it up to keep it out of her way and stop it from sticking to her when she begins to sweat. She’s found that when she leaves it down it often turns an icky black brown color, and tangling easily, instead of its actual red brown color with much less tangles.
Because she follows the tradition of her family she works at the forge crafting tools, weapons, and armor. Though she personally is loath to work on the tools and armor Kassy is fairly exceptional at the craft. This gives her a slightly slender look but a strong build her muscles having built as she helped her father, her brothers, and finally began crafting herself.
At a height of 5'10’’ she’s just average in height but her slightly slim build makes her appear taller than she actually is. Kassy likes to blame it on the fact that she wears pants and a tunic at the forge instead of a skirt as her mother does, having often been teased by her older brothers about it. When she was upset her father would tell her how lovely she was by complimenting her green eyes, always telling how much like her mother she was.
Personality:
Gentle Heart / Short Temper
While Kassy has grown up with strong family ties with both of her parents as well as her brothers, she has found herself developing a gentle heart. Before the Holdless attack she had truly believed the world to be a good and fair place, though that view has been seriously shaken. On the same hand, being the only girl in the family besides her mother, Kassy had been spoiled to a point – teaching her to develop a short temper to get things her way. While she’s now trying to school that temper, it still flairs now and then.
Self Confidence / Second Guesses Adults
While under her parents care they taught her to have confidence in herself, to have a tough skin and not let other peoples words bother her in how she views both herself and other people. With her parents gone, she’s had to begin listening much more to the adults around her, and ask for advice in things she is still yet unfamiliar with. Even so, she finds herself doubting their words at times.
Evaluates / Brooding
Having grown up with two older brothers that she was so often chasing after she quickly learned to think things over. Things like chasing them around corners wasn’t the brightest idea, especially at full run. They’d once tripped her by sticking out a foot as she ran past. She now uses that sense of thinking to evaluate the situations and things said around her, coming to decisions on her own when she is unsure of all else. With her two brothers gone, and her parents with them she’s become a bit of a brooding girl pulling deep into her own thoughts at times, she hasn’t spoken to anyone about her parents or brothers dying and in fact seems to have closed off most of those around her.
Believes in Fairness / Unpredictable
Despite her brothers constantly, or perhaps in fact because they did pick on her so much, Kassy has a strong belief in fairness. Things should be divided evenly among both friends and foes. It created a balance of sorts, yes her brothers had always been close as a rider and a dragon, but in the end she had become just as close with her younger brother. Now it might be said that Kassy is a good judge, not everyone would agree. Everyone has their own view on what is fair and what is not, some have found that at certain times it’s best to just not bother with Kassy at all because her moods seem to flip around during the conversation.
Good with Brother / Trust Issues
Kassy had the pleasure of growing up with three fine big hearted brothers, though her older brothers didn’t always seem to show their extra large hearts she knew that they were there. When her younger brother was born she found herself staying with him so much that she couldn’t imagine what a day would be like without him. She got along just as well with her younger brother as her older brothers seemed to. However, with recent events she’s found herself hard pressed to fully trust in anyone but herself and her little brother. She’s lost many friends since her parents died because she simply stopped talking to them as often, or seeming to care as much as she once did. Leaving her with nothing but her brother. In the end, she’s lost everything and finds she isn’t sure if she can make friends without questioning them.
Hobbies/Skills:
Kassy often liked to ensure the ‘efficiency’ of the tools and equipment that her and her siblings crafted by, ‘testing’ it with each other. She isn’t nearly as good as her brothers were at sparring, but she did so enjoy trying to best them and competing with them. One day her father even joined in and helped her.
Though of late she has come to accept she will no longer be able to practice such things, and has turned to a practice of whittling slowly working wood down to the proper shape of some of the things that she crafts trying to picture exactly how her father made each item.
Before she did whittle a little, but those had been of the cats she’d come to admire and she had been excited that her brother had been accepted by the Dragon Shield, but it had ended so quickly.
Pets:
Name: Undetermined
Bonded To: Kassarin
Color: Green
Age: Newly Hatched
Egg: Moth Egg
Description: The Moth flitter is a dark forest green. She’s not a single shade of it though, there are darker and lighter shades of the green all over her hide. In the Weyr it seems a bit odd and makes her stand out, but once she’s outside she blends in perfectly with the trees around the Weyr. She still has the eye spots that were on her egg as well, though they can only be seen when her wings are stretched out.
Personality: Most people will find the Moth flitter a little odd. During the day she tends to nap around and be lazy. But as soon as it starts to get dark out she comes to life. She’s mostly active during the predawn and twilight hours of the day and does her hurting and flights during those few hours. But even in the dark when she can’t see, she can be heard scurrying around and making noise.
History:
Kassirin was born to the proud parents of Zakilor and Rilissa. Her two brothers were not as excited but quickly took to teasing her as she grew older and began walking and speaking. It always felt like she was chasing after her two brothers who often left her behind with their mother. After one particular harsh bout of crying from being left behind again her mother took her to her father who was working at the forge.
She was still young and could not really learn anything of what she was watching but she calmed as she watched her father work and teach her brothers the craft. It wasn’t until she was older that she realized what was happening, but was still not permitted to begin helping. They kept her on a stool near the door so that she wasn’t as bothered by the heat of the forge as she would have been at that age.
She never did get bored of watching her father and brothers working, even if she did watching the fire was fascination and she often fell asleep on the stool leaning back against the wall. That was how she spent most of her very young turns.
When she was finally able to help craft she did so with such joy and excitement, until she saw how wrong her creation had gone. Her father’s patience after two boys was strong and he helped her many times as she learned how to properly use the tools of her family. She learned from her mistakes as best she could and when she couldn’t she turned to her father or brothers for answers. Though whenever she asked one of her brothers they would tease her endlessly but in the end she got the answer she needed.
It was around this time that another member of the family was born, another boy, Osilar, who Kassy thought looked just like their father. She helped her mother as much as possible, but still often ran away to be with her father and older brothers to work on her training. It was tough trying to balance training and playing with a baby. However, the adults quickly realized it was a good funnel for all her extra/young energy.
She wasn’t permitted to craft weapons until quite a few turns later. It had come at a cost to her however. She had begged her father for a whole turn, pestered her brothers for nearly the same time, and tried to convince her mother to agree with her. In the end it was her father who took her aside and showed her what harm a sword could do by cutting up hay. But she still insisted, and he imposed many rules on her, but finally he allowed it.
Her father stayed with her through every step, showing her how to ensure she didn’t hurt herself during the process. She proved fairly decent at it, but not once did she attempt to craft any weapon without her father hovering nearby. Though as her brothers got older they began to become more interested in the Dragons Shield especially her oldest brother Todorin.
To help Todorin her other brother Matlan took the swords and shields they had crafted and under the pretense of testing the quality of their work practiced with one another. Kassy was once again being left behind, but this time she refused. When her siblings refused she attacked them anyway and they had no choice but to defend themselves.
When it was all over, it was by sheer luck that no one had come upon the three of them, or she would have been in serious trouble. A girl, did not get to practice with swords like this, especially a crafter. At least, not in her family. She pleaded with her brothers not tell on her to their father, and after much debate she finally bargained to do their chores in turn if they at least taught her a little bit.
She wasn’t very good at it, but all she really wanted was to help prepare her brothers, to be with them and included. For a full turn it felt as if she was. Though Kassy was unaware her father knew what was going on, but as a master blacksmith he knew what weapons and armor looked like after they had been used, and in one session Kassy was doing particularly bad. Her father who had been watching from the side lines finally emerged and fearing the worst Kassy had all but dropped the shield and dagger.
Expecting a full verbal lashing she hung her head but instead her father took her hand and raised it slightly bending her arm just so. “Watch your opponent Kassy, watch all of him. His legs, his arms, shoulders, but most of all watch his eyes. They will tell you when he is about to strike.” There were not words for the emotions that rushed through Kassy in a rush at her father’s words.
The practice only lasted for one turn however, because shortly after the holdless attacked. Her mother, father, and two brothers had gone to speak with several of the Dragon Shield, she had stayed behind working on one last little task. She’d been putting it off for ages, and she’d tried to go with initially but her father had reminded her she had something to do, forbidding her to join them until she was done.
Her youngest brother, bless his little heart had voted to stay and watch her finish the small project, which was just a simple belt buckle repair. Osilar had become quiet close with her in the past two turns, keeping her company and chattering away at her while she worked, which helped pass the time. How she HATED those things, she would be utterly happy to never see a stupid belt buckle ever again. It was that belt buckle that saved her, and her little brothers life. When the holdless attacked, she didn’t know what was going on, but quickly realized something was wrong.
She attempted to seal the door to the forge, and with her little brother crawled into a small cubby hole at the side of the hot forge where they usually stored special requests that people made to her father. She clasped her little brother tightly to her with a small dagger in one hand for that just in case.
It wasn’t until the wyer had nearly gone silent that she chanced a glance out of the hiding spot. She emerged with hesitance dragging a scared younger brother by the hand with her. As the oldest Kassy came to the conclusion that they should go home and wait for their mother, father, and older brothers to return.
They never came back… The shock, dread, and sadness raged a vast war inside her chest as she fought to remain calm and strong for her little brother. Another of the blacksmiths of the weyr took over where her father had left off, after all she couldn't do it herself since she was still an apprentice.
Kassy didn’t however know what to think of this man despite having known him for quiet some time, certainly she felt weariness, and anger. He was touching tools that belonged to her family. He even had the gall to complain about the quality once. At which point she’d taken the tool and taken it home with her.
Since the attack Kassy had not allowed Osilar out of her sight, and rarely out of arms reach. She was afraid to let him go. What if the holdless came back and took the only one she had left? She couldn’t let him out of her sight.
Which left her to teaching her younger brother what she had already been taught in her 8 turns as an apprentice. Showing him, as her father had how to shape the earth with fire, water, and air. Telling him stories every night the same stories her father and mother had once told her. He’d probably heard them, but he didn’t complain. Kassy herself, she didn’t know what to do but to keep going and try and become the blacksmith her father had once been. That would make her parents proud wouldn’t it? She’d make sure that Osilar would have the same knowledge that their father had shared with her, would be imparted to him.
