Character
Name: Dereo
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Rank: Apprentice Beastcrafter
Emphasis: Runners
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Family:
Father: Derellon [54]
Mother: Lucia [51]
Brothers: Lun [28]
Lerell [25]
Cellio [18]
Sisters: Rella [27]
Nollia [20]
(real men wear pink)
Appearance: Dereo comes from a family of big people. At only 6’3 Dereo is ‘short’ for his family. His shoulders are wide, giving him a larger chest and a lot of upper body strength, which comes in handy when working with large animals. His arms, chest and legs are covered in heavy muscles, not the kind of muscles that come from doing the same work out every day, but muscles that he’s earned through hard work and labor.
Dark is a good word to use when describing Dereo physically. His thick hair is jet black, eyes a dark dark brown as well. His skin has been baked brown by the sun. He has a smattering of freackles on his nose and cheeks, though it’s hard to notice them unless he’s been out of the sun for a bit.
Dereo has had his share of scars and broken bones. His nose is slightly crooked after being broken a few times. A couple of kicks from runners has earned him a few broken ribs, a broken arm, dislocated shoulders… Scars dot his torso as well, nothing too major though, just the marks of someone who doesn’t fear injury.
Dereo’s clothing is nothing too special. His clothes fit him well, he doesn’t want a baggy shirt getting caught on something after all. He always wears a belt with a number of pouches on it, filled with random things; herbs for when a runner isn’t feeling well, a small knife, a small thing of numbweed, needle and thread, the list goes on and changes. He likes to be ready for things though.
As of late, D'ero has grown out his facial hair. He has a beard and a bit of a mushtashe that he keeps neatly trimmed and doesn't let grow out too much. He mainly just wants to look a little older and not have such a baby face, especially if he's going to flirt with a woman who has ten years on him.
Personality: Dereo tends to like animals better then people. It’s not that he doesn’t like people or that he’s not social, he just spends more of his time around animals. It some times takes him a little bit to adjust to how people act. People want more then a kindly spoken word, a soft pat, and a treat from him. Animals don’t lie to him or play politics like people do, they’re much easier to understand then people are.
Dereo tends to be a very straight forward and blunt person. He’s rather literal and doesn’t quiet get sarcasm or dry humor. He doesn’t like people being coy with him, or hinting things to him, if you have something to say just spit it out. He tries to live like that; if he’s got a problem with you he’ll say what he doesn’t like, or if he likes someone he’ll just blurt it out in a very unromantic way. He’s also terrible at playing politics and leaves that up to everyone else. When dealing with someone important he knows to keep his mouth shut but otherwise he can’t suck up to anyone.
Dereo tries to be a good guy. He sticks up for people and while he doesn’t like to get into fights he’s more then willing to use his size to try and intimidate and end something before it starts. If he does get into a fight he’s not very good, he’s a bit slow and his punches aren’t graceful but he’s got the muscle to make a hit hurt. If someone tries to push him around Dereo just lets it go and tries not to make a big deal out of things, it’s only with other people or with animals that he gets defensive.
Dereo would rather just be a nice guy. He likes being able to do little things to cheer someone up. If he can help their little pet he’ll do it, try to fix a saddle or patch up a hole and he’s more then happy to help out. He has a soft spot for children, especially little girls. He’ll often bring little gifts to kids, a small piece of candy, wild flowers, maybe something he’s carved.
Hobbies/Skills: Dereo knows how to care for and breed a number of animals. Runners are what he knows best though he has a good understanding of herdbeasts as well. He also got a bit of a crash course in dragons and flitts as well so he has an idea of what to expect but by no means is a dragonhealer.
He’s also got some first-aid knowledge as well. He knows how to set broken bones, do stitches, help a pregnant woman give birth (it’s a long story).
His main hobby that doesn’t have to do with his craft is carving. He likes to sit back and night and relax by doing some wood carving. He’s terrible at it though. Anything he tries to carve comes out looking like some four legged creature. He knows it bad but still enjoys the act of it.
Pets: None
History: Dereo was the middle child in his family. He always had someone to play with, be it an older or younger sibling. His parents owned a farm near Keroon Hold, nothing too big but it was enough for the family. They raised a few crops but his father was more interested in breeding runners and herdbeasts. As he started to add to their herds, Dereo took more of an interest in helping out, spending most of his time with the runners as he learned to take care of them. Seeing the interest his son had in the animals, Dereo’s father sugguested that the boy should go to the Beastcrafting Hall. If Dereo didn’t enjoy it then he could come back home with some new knowledge that was bound to be useful.
So Dereo went off to the hall and quickly threw himself into the studies. He loved what he learned and especially like that so much of it was hands on work. He liked working with runners the most, they were smart animals that were a good judge of character, something which Dereo valued. He was good with them too, he was calm and easy going and didn’t try to rush the runners into liking him. He also knew what their favorite treats were and wasn’t above bribing them.
He worked hard at the hall, not paying too much attention to what was going on in the outside world. Getting his journeyman knot and working on a new breed of runner was more important that hearing about dust storms. But not even the thought of getting his knot could stop him from hearing the whispered rumors of an up coming Thread Fall and the threat of civil war.
Disturbed by these rumors, Dereo took a break from the craft hall returned home. He spent some time with his family, hearing from them what had been going on and how Keroon Hold along with others believed that Thread was coming. Dereo traveled to the Hold, talking to different people trying to hear more about what was going on and what was being done about it. It bothered him to hear that nothing more then talking was happening. One evening spent in the Drinking Hall and he voiced his complaints too loudly while he was drunk, scolding anyone who would listen that they should be doing more then just sitting around and wishing for dragon riders to come back. Disgusted by the holds lack of action, Dereo returned home and a few days later went back to the hall were he returned to work, though more distracted then before.
A few weeks went by with nothing happening. The rumors stayed the same and Dereo got back into his work, enjoying the private time he got to spend with his small herd of runners. When returning to his room late one evening, he found that someone had broken in and left him a few things; an old tome that continued a few hidden pages on dragon anatomy and a note. The note said that if he was truly interested in helping to go to the halls library the next night. He went, curious to find out what this was all about. After a few hours of waiting, the author of the note showed up, dressed in a hooded robe so Dereo never saw who it was. The man told him that an expedition was being sent to the south and that a beastcrafter was needed. It had been decided that Dereo fit this role perfectly if he was willing to go. Without a second thought Dereo agreed to go on the expedition and was told when and where it would leave from. He made his arrangements and when the time came he left for the expedition, telling the hall that he was going home due to a family illness and telling his family he was traveling around to try and help others with their beasts.
The trip south was not one that Dereo cared for. It turned out that he doesn't like boats a whole lot and never did get use to the way the ship would move under his feet. He mostly kept to himself as well, finding it hard to deal with some of the little lordlings. Once they finally landed though, Dereo ended up becoming more friendly with Osaris, the Lord Holder of High Reaches daughter. The two both had a passion for runners and Osaris was a bit odd for being a lordling.
Since being caught by the Dragon Shield, Dereo has done his best to stay out of trouble and keep his thoughts to himself. He didn't understand why the Weyr was willing to let them all stand on the sands and try to Impress in the upcoming hatching. He knew that it couldn't just be out of the kindness of the Weyr's heart. He kept his own feelings about it all to himself, letting most of the others get excited about it.
Though he debated trying to avoid the hatching when the time came, Dereo found him unable to do it. He was too curious to see if he could Impress. And he didn't want to risk drawing attention to himself. Dereo didn't have to wait long to see if he was worthy enough for a dragon, the second one to hatch Impressed to him right away, bonding him to the brown Horuth.
D'ero worked hard in weyrling lessons, wanting to prove himself, though he never knew who he was trying to impress. When it came to the other weyrlings, he kept mostly to himself, never being rude to the others but never actively seeking to join the little groups that they formed. Instead, he ended up finding the Dragon Shield member Jarshan when he went out searching for wood one afternoon. He was impressed with the woman and over the coming months developed a crush on her.
Towards the end of his weyrling lessons, D'ero finally got the guts to ask Jarshan out. She agreed and the two started dating. D'ero is quite crazy for the woman and is thankful that she has a better grip on his dragon rider status then he does.
When he finally graduated, D'ero was given the honor of being the first named rider, joining the ranks of the Illume wing.
Name: Horuth (Hore-uh-th)
Impressed To: Dereo
Color: Brown
Age: Newly Hatched
Description: In an odd tribute to his egg, this brown seems to have the same markings as the falcons depicted upon the shell. A reddish-brown in base color, Horuth’s face is of a darker hue, as well as the back of his neck. Small, various flecks also adorn his upper body, giving this brown a mottled appearance. The tops of his wings share this deeper hue, but the undersides are the same reddish shade as his legs and belly. On his paws, there is a light, tawny brown, and this same color is brushed upon his neckridges as well. His claws are solid black. Smaller in size than most browns, Horuth will not be the largest of his clutch, but he is built agile, able to perform more aerial stunts than his brothers.
Personality: Despite his small stature, this brown is a very proud dragon. Rather dignified and majestic, Horuth would have been suited well to a bronze hide instead. Extremely noble, this dragon will one day develop a ‘hero’ personality, with a desire to prove himself as a strong and capable protector of Refuge. In wake of this, he will also discover a reckless side to his personality, with no regard for danger at all. Horuth feels that fun and games are beneath him, and especially looks down on a certain blue brother for his love of mischief. However, this brown still enjoys flirting with any green that he finds attractive, though his ego may turn her off.
If there is one thing he hates, however, it is lying. Horuth possesses a deep-set sense of truth, and he absolutely despises anyone who would tell a falsehood. He especially loathes anyone lying to him, and will likely never forgive such a trespass. He feels it is cowardly to lie about anything at all, and his noble demeanor gives him an intense detestation of such a thing. This brown is a dignified dragon, and he will expect his bonded to be the same.
History: Horuth was the second dragon to hatch, confusing people at first due to the copper hue in his hide. He quickly bonded to the Northerner whom he felt suited him.
Horuth is a quick learner during lessons, just like his rider. Both work hard to prove themselves but try to do it in a way that doesn't bring too much attention to themselves. If asked a question, they can answer it but they try and let others take the spot light as well.
For any HAD that could listen to Horuth and D'ero, they would find very little talking going on between the pair. The two constantly share emotions with each other but neither speaks to the other much, they don't need to. When one speaks, the other listens closely though, never brushing off anything that's said. Both of them are less dependent on each other then other dragons and riders are, spending a few hours away from each other is no big deal to them, though days would be another matter.
