Appearance:
(Face Claim: Tonantzín Carmelo )
Laure was born with smooth skin which transcended into even her teen turns. A medium coloring neither light nor dark, she never burns in sunlight, and heat affects her less than the paler folk. She has long straight black hair, falling to her lower back. Often it is braided in one long plait to keep it out of the way. Her expressive, large eyes are so dark a brown that they appear black. Laure has thin black eyebrows which are almost straight till coming to a point where they slant downward slightly.
Her eyelashes are long, straight and black, much like her hair. She would not consider herself a beauty. There is a rugged look to her most of the time. Her straight nose and high cheekbones are much like that of a Native American in our society. Slender not out of strenuous exercise but lack of a decent meal most days, she is not one to be an excessive eater even when there is much food available. Though she is slim, she is in no way tall, standing at no more than 5'4”.
There is a radiance in the young woman's smile, white flashing teeth, slightly pink lips that puff out just enough to seem sensual. Her lips are shaped well and seem to go along with the color and size well. Her chin stretches down a couple of inches from her lips, making the shape of her face oval and not round. Her ears are small and often unnoticeable.
The most distinguishing feature about Laure is the birthmark on her ankle which looked at a certain way can look like a distant dragon. She wears clothing that is often two sizes too big and meant for men rather than women but the Holdless take what they can get as far as clothing goes. She only has one shirt and one pair of very loose tan colored pants which have been cut to just above her ankle. Laure has no shoes and thus her feet are calloused and scarred.
Personality:
There is something to be said for people like Laure. People who see the world for what it is and are not disappointed in how difficult it is. Laure might even savor the challenge of life. All of her sixteen Turns have been devoted to making her own life the way she sees it rather than the way others want it to be. Disappointing other people does not bother her as much as it probably should. Then it would be different if people were to actually care about her well being. As it stands now though, she knows very few people who she would be sad to let down. She is living life for herself. Claiming what she wants by going out into the world and seeking it out.
Brave some might call it or perhaps it is simply the next step in her journey. She believes that staying would have been harder than leaving was. Therefore bravery is probably not the word to describe her. She would use words like independent both in her ideas and her actions. She needs no one. Were she to be born into a loving, caring family perhaps her outlook on other people would be different. As it stands, she thinks other people are only out to control her thoughts and use her as a weapon against other people. Something she really does not see the purpose of. If you cage a bird it will always find a way to slip through your fingers.
She is introverted more so because of her upbringing than for any real desire to keep her thoughts to herself. Laure is a deep thinker and quite a logical one at times too. The comparison to a dragon's mind might be stretching things a bit but she has a hard time being emotional at all. As if shutting people out all the way required her to feel nothing. Not joy, not pain, sadness or hope. Mostly she thinks and acts on what is and what the consequences will be if she does something.
It is a rare day when Laure will let loose. She is prone to being too serious and takes life in all its form quite seriously as well. The young woman knows how quickly death can come upon you and realizes that living life is important but it can't hurt to be cautious. She may just be so cautious that nothing will ever happen to her in life or in love. Despite a deep desire to feel love she would never allow herself to become vulnerable enough to be in love.
She is a hardened person based on Turns of survival of the fittest scenarios growing up. There is nothing that Laure would not do to survive, except perhaps kill. A minor flaw in her frozen facade. Even the cold people of the world can have a moral ground. She does not feel she has the right to take another persons life. Perhaps if she felt there was no way out of a situation and it was her life or theirs she might fight. However, Laure never was good with a weapon. Could she defend herself if her life depended upon it? Yes and probably better than the average Pernese but she has no innate skill. Nothing compared to the other people at the Holdless Camp. Actually there is almost no comparison.
With neither the heart nor the skill for fighting, Laure has found other things to be talented at. She is great with a fishing pole and at finding edible plants even some medicinal ones. She has a knack for surviving even the harshest of scenarios. Nothing could push her down. One word that defines her character almost completely is perseverance.
Another word for it might be stubborn. Once she sets her mind to something, she has to see it through. No matter how difficult a task it might be. There is something strong about her inside that is not quite matched by her frail seeming appearance. Inside she is strong, inside she can fight with the ideas others forced upon her even when she outwardly could not. And it would be her inner demons that would always tempt her to become something greater, to be something more than what she thought she was going to be. It was here that dreams came into being and while she always saw the world as it was, every so often she would take a glimpse of how it could be.
Hobbies/Skills: Riding stolen Runners. Her only real skill she learned from her family was how to survive. She is okay at hand to hand combat but she never really had a talent for weapons at all. Knows how to fish with a pole and scavenge for edible plants.
Pets: None
History:
The Holdless had come to the Southern Continent with the Dragonriders over 100 Turns ago, though then they worked at the Weyrs or in one of the small cotholds in the outlying territory. At some point or another, Laure's family felt opressed by their new Leaders who resided in the Weyrs. They felt that the dragons were uneccesary and were merely parasites, living off the work of humans who did not impress to them. The feelings grew more and more and as generations passed, it seemed the idea was ingrained into all of them.
The hate was strong enough that even small children quickly learned that Dragons and their riders were bad. Mentioning them would get you in trouble. This was the world that Laure was born into. A world where people had to steal to be clothed, to eat and even to send a message. When Laure was born her family was well established at the Holdless Camp. Her mother was a fairly good cook and her father knew how to hunt some of the wild animals so that they could keep people fed when pickings were slim at the holds.
She already had six older siblings when she was born and so the raising of Laure was mostly left to them. Many times she was forgotten about in the excitement of the day. As it was, Laure learned to be independent enough to look after herself most of the time. She learned to gather edible plants in the jungle and how to fish in the river. They were probably the only two things she was any good at as far as being useful to the other Holdless went. Spending a lot of time on her own taught her a good many things. Not the least of which being to think for oneself.
Laure grew in age and her responsibilities in turn grew with her. Unfortunately this meant having to join the active thieving and attacking of small holds. Here is where she not only feels she is different but realizes how severe the differences are.
Where her family believes with a complete blind trust in what the other Holdless cling to, that dragonriders were the scum of Pern and needed to be brought to justice, Laure saw nothing of the kind. Quite the opposite, she saw what her family and friends did and was disgusted. Why should they take from hard working people just because they served the Dragonriders?
Her ideas were not well liked and she was punished more than once for her own insolence till she learned to keep her mouth shut. Most punishments were not severe but she was growing a reputation of being unsound. Only proved true after her first involvment in attacking a cothold.
Half of her team was killed in action, she made it out via stolen runner but most people were convinced the deaths and failure of that particular mission were her fault. Therefore, it was the decision of the Leaders that she be kept at camp until she saw the light. Whether they meant accepting the deaths of the others as her fault or accepting their entire mission, she was not sure. Laure was not the type of person to be easily swayed by punishment and while most Holdless would hate to be left behind while others claimed the glory, Laure was more than happy to stay home.
She had plenty of her own adventures fishing and gathering fruits, nuts and vegetables. Every so often she would find medicinal herbs which she brought back from her excursions. However, nothing she did was ever good enough for her family. She had disgraced them more than they would ever forgive. She was almost seen as bad as the dragonriders. After two Turns of being treated like dirt to be trod over, Laure came to the decision that as much as they despised her there were people out there who would accept and possibly love her as their own. All she needed to do was get to them.
At the age of sixteen, Laure loosed her stolen runner, allowing it freedom. After packing her three treasures in a small pouch, held on by a belt, she left camp. Laure knew only one thing for certain, she was moving on with her life and leaving behind nothing she would regret being without. Her next move would lead to a new life without thieving and without killing.
Her journey however was not how she anticipated it would be. The rain fell like never before causing flooding everywhere she went. Finding shelter was difficult. Edible plants were swept away by the waters, even animals were hard to find. The only thing she had a plethora of was water. Trudging through mud, starving to death, she found herself at the mercy of a dragonrider from Refuge Weyr. He was under the impression that Laure was a lost Candidate. Who was she to argue?
After a little scare, she decided she was too weak not to go to the Weyr. She needed food and shelter, which they had. She was not however ready to tell them she was Holdless. Time passed at the Weyr until the Hatching arrived. Here she thought her luck might change. Unfortunately she was nearly killed when the young Queen fell into her and a fellow Candidate, Lyndel.
Now on the mend, she has seen her brother, whom has sworn to kill her because she is a traitor to the Holdless. The same brother who accidentally impressed a blue dragon at the Hatching.
