Character Info:
Name: Rhodri (Row-dree)
Age: 18 (update 7/7/12, Turn 1262)
Gender: male
Rank: Apprentice Beastcrafter
Family:
Darket- father (44) Journeyman Beastcrafter
Lividia- mother (40) homemaker
Siblings
Vienra (20, f) cotholder's wife, Keroon
Mayribell(16, f)
Tomken (13, m) Apprentice Beastcrafter
Appearance:
He spends about as much time on his appearance as an average teenage boy here does. His six foot one inch tall self rolls out of bed in the morning, nearly hitting his head on the top bunk as he has just finished another growth spurt. Rhodri doesn't remember getting so tall just yet.
After rolling out of bed, he throws his over worn, patched clothes over his athletic body. His shirt is similar to a t-shirt although the fabric is beginning to thin from washing. His brown pants are buttoned onto his small waist. The fit is loose, so he has to wear a belt made from herdbeast leather. His boots are similarly made and just as worn out as the rest of his apparel.
The young man then goes to the wash room, and splashes cool water from a basin onto his oval face. He is rather lucky in that he has the occasional break out of pimples which over the past Turn seemed to have dwindled considerably. His skin is mostly clear, most of the time. His forehead is a bit broad but covered a little by his messy brown hair. The color is a rich, warm brown matching his eyes. The scraggly, straight brows above are not well groomed, but he is saved by his complexion and eyes.
His nose is not symmetrical to his face although the asymmetric quality seems to work for him as his smile is also a little crooked but in a smirk like way. He has a wide jaw, with cleft that is only barely noticeable. Rhodri has unfortunately large ears, that would stick out more if he didn't keep his hair long enough to cover them a bit.
Personality:
Rhodri has spent most of his life working with runners and training them. This has left him with certain attributes which help deal with situations where someone is under quite a bit of pressure and possible danger. He never stresses the little things. If he did, well...he would be his mother and we don't want that! There is a calmness to him which seems to set people and animals at ease around him. His mother mentioned in passing more than once that the boy could calm a storm. Patient to the point where one wonders if anything bothers him. Time, pressure, fury, nothing seems to make him react.
He tends to speak when needed and other than that observes the world around him. He believes the things people don't say are more important than what they do.So he quietly observes the people and world around him through his coffee colored eyes. The youth is more confident in other people more than himself although he thinks that he can do something if he believes enough in himself to do it. His confidence is only shaken when he fails at something. Failing at a task is one of the worst feelings for him. He prefers to persevere and get things right. When he fails it sends him into a spiral of self loathing and criticism which he bottles up inside himself with the rest of his emotions.
He can be seen as optimistic. To Rhodri the glass is half full... then he drinks it. If you can't enjoy life, why bother with whether its going to end well or not? The fact that Rhodri lets life go by without much thought of shaping its direction makes him anything but ambitious. Its not that he couldn't lead if he really wanted to. Or maybe he couldn't? But Rhodri would prefer to be a regular guy. He doesn't see himself achieving a higher rank than Journeyman and he certainly won't be pushy about it. Because of this lack of ambition he is seen as lazy to those in authority positions. Rhodri likes having some free time to have fun rather than spend all his time working. A good mix of work and play is how life should be for him.
An athletic young man, he spends most of his day riding runners in Keroon, when he moves to the Weyr he might feel the need to exert some of the energy he has in other ways. Perhaps swimming or running or exercising the runners there. There is no question about his integrity. He is possibly the most loyal and honest person you are likely to meet. His frankness is often not without wisdom. He is consistent in his actions and does not gossip. He often belittles his own achievements and does not take compliments well...at all. "Anyone could have done..." is the usual response.
Gives freely to others without expecting anything in return which is a good and bad thing. If he only has one pair of shoes and someone else needs them. He'll give his away and leave himself with nothing. He is just setting himself up to be walked all over by people with more pushy personalities. Rhodri can be a romantic sort but he tends to prefer to pursue girls rather than the other way around. He has grown up in the North and the idea of monogamy has been ingrained in him. The idea of having multiple lovers at one time seems a bit silly even crazy to him.
"Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." He acknowledges that some things in life are scary but he would still ride out and meet them face on if he could rather than cower and hide from them. Unfortuantely Thread is one of those threats one can not exactly fight from the ground. He is trying to help keep the few runners his family has left, alive and safe from starving people who would eat them.
His favorite drink is really bitter, strong klah. Gives one just enough of a kick in the morning to really get moving.
Emphasis: Runnerbeast training
Hobbies/Skills: Skilled at Runner Training. He tends to train them in a gentle fashion and does not believe in "breaking them". Has a basic education, reading and writing on an average level. He likes fishing but he never gets to go anymore.
Pets: N/A
History:
Rhodri's family is sickeningly normal. They have family dinner every night, talk about their day and keep the communication lines open. Where his father could sometimes be a bit aloof, his mother was the opposite. Her loving nature could almost be smothering to people who were not used to it. She cares so deeply about people and animals that she sometimes overly worries about things. This quality might have created his more laid back attitude.
Growing up he was close with his family, especially his siblings. Although he was always quiet, the boy made plenty of friends. The secret to making friends he found was in listening not talking except to comment on what the other person was saying. Rhodri was an active listener and would not only respond with non-committal noises. The other secret was being really good with runner beasts. He was the runner whisperer among the people he knew. The most scared of them seemed to respond to the kind, calm and confident boy.
One day he really almost gave his mother a heart attack. He was out in one of the training fields watching his father do everything wrong. He might only be an apprentice but he was learning a good deal about the behavior of the beasts just by watching them. His father stormed off, leaving a very anxious and upset runner. Rhodri slid through the bars of the fence before his mother could stop him. Honestly the runner was wild and according to his father, fucking insane. The runner came charging towards him, fit tot crush his little nine Turn old body but it stopped just short of him. He had locked eyes with the creature long before he entered the fence. The runner was staring back, snorting air out of its suede nostrils. After a few moments, Rhodri stuck his hand out with some grass in it, which the runner hesitated to take from him but eventually came to it. After another few days, Rhodri was riding the runner, bareback. He became Rhodri's runner, a gift from his father, whom he named Zip.
After a few turns, his father began letting him do training without supervision while he focused on health and care of runners and began teaching his younger brother. The girls, as was the norm in the North, were at home, learning to keep a home from their mother. He did not see any problem with that. Although it seemed some women were less understanding of that. None more so than his younger sister. She balked at doing women's work and was a constant thorn in her mother's side. Eventually she had to do what she had to do or leave. The world was not safe for a young girl all alone so she had to accept her fate, for the time being. Rhodri has a feeling one day she would break free and get away from this life since she hated it so much. He does not call her by her name. Rhodri calls her little bird. They are closest of their siblings even if they are the most different.
As he has grown older, Rhodri has become increasingly aware of girls and how they act around him. He has yet to really commit to any girl but he has been known to flirt with some of the girls who are his friends. It seems to be quite common among the other teens in the area from what he has seen. He has recently withdrawn from flirting with the girls as he finds it more and more difficult to think about any one in particular. This is something he has inner qualms with. His moral center tells him that he should only like and commit to one woman for his whole life. Its the way of Pern and he honestly could not see himself doing anything that would harm a woman's reputation. His sister says he is being old fashioned and that Pern needed to move forward with the times too. He'd rather not ask her what she means by it.
Rhodri's many friends and family make it hard to contemplate what will happen if he makes Journeyman. Will he be sent somewhere else? What will he do when he has no one around that he knows? He is none to eager to advance in the craft, except that then he could afford a home of his own, his own runners... he could revolutionize the way runners are trained across Pern. But, he just wanted to be home where things were familiar. Change. He didn't much like it. Inevitable though it might be, he would rather things went on the way they had been for so long. Lately he has withdrawn from people a little as he thinks more deeply about his future. Normally all his chores are done in the morning so that he can take time for himself in the afternoons which contributes to why he can come across as lazy at times. He often rides out on his bay stallion, Zip, in the afternoons to avoid family and friends these days.
