Nightmares were keeping her from sleep so she slept in the forest. She was more comfortable outside the Weyr these days although it might not be as safe. Nowhere was safe anymore. From her point of view things were only getting worse. She was protecting something she believed strongly in. That was all anyone could ask of her right now. The feelings she might once have kept just beneath the skins surface had buried themselves deeper. She was more aloof and distant than ever before. The young woman’s life had been changed forever for the worse it seemed. She was incredibly dedicated and for her age quite skilled. Any member of the Dragon Shield was worth at least ten guards.
The only things keeping her sane were Eve and Leeto. Even they could not seem to get the girl to open herself up any more than she would allow. When she woke up that morning she had decided not to go back into the Weyr. Not just yet. She would enjoy her solitude for a little while longer. Taking her bow and arrows out, she walked to a place she commonly used as a practice area. She lifted the bow, arrow notched, and let it go. The arrow was succeeded by seven more before she went to retrieve them. The hole in the tree from where the arrows hit was actually substantial considering. Leeto was about as impressed as a rock would be. He stretched for a good minute before pacing back and forth in boredom. “Go hunt. Might as well find some food while you are out here silly feline!”
Eve was even less happy about being out in the woods. She liked what the cooks made for her. They were all so nice to her. She was a well behaved Gold flit and so the kitchen staff spoiled her. Kyrah had to keep the flit in good condition which was not helped by the kitchen staff whatsoever. She was not going to say anything to them though, the only reason they tolerated her was because of Eve. The red head began to go through some of the defensive moves she had learned. Women were not built the same way as men. She learned how to use her body to her advantage against men much larger than she was.
If only she could leave into the forest and have no one miss her. Or even leave and not feel some sort of guilt or failure. Her mother and half-brothers would not understand. Let alone the other Shield members. People she found she could trust were so few and far between that she never took the time to think about where she would be without them. Now she felt alone, so alone that she wondered if she could ever trust anyone completely again. Her red hair had grown out over the past Turn which she now tied back out of her face. She missed having it short but her mother had asked her to grow it out this once. Only for a couple of Turns. When she visited, her mother spent some time brushing it and braiding it as if hair had anything to do with Kyrah's feelings. She never thought to ask if her mother missed her uncle as much as Kyrah did.
