How did she end up with these jobs? She asked herself not for the last time that morning. As always the red head wore her leather gear and sturdy yet pliable boots. On her right shoulder sat her Gold firelizard Eve, and on her left side sat the jungle feline whom she had tamed. The look in her pale eyes was intense beyond her twenty turns. She was here to train them to train their firelizards and to care for them properly. There would be no time for silliness or games. She would not be treated with anything less than respect by them and the very air of the Hatching Caverns reflected this. She wasted no time. They were meeting first thing in the morning, just like Weyrlings would. The light of dawn had begun to shine into the immense cavern when Kyrah allowed Eve to chirp in greeting to the young firelizards. The red head was slightly less enthusiastic. She was not to keen on the young ones taking care of something she valued as part of the good of the weyr. Already one of them had nearly injured theirs by dropping the egg. "Today you will be learning basic care and needs for your firelizards. Those of you who thought this would be a walk on the beach are about to be sorely disappointed. This is Eve, some of you may know her. She is one of the best trained firelizards at this Weyr and I'm going to tell you why. She has worked hard and I have worked hard to make sure that she would be. Your firelizards will not have as intense a job as Eve does therefore you need more basic commands. All firelizards need to be cared for well no matter their occupation. There are no firelizard healers. If yours gets ill or seriously injured they can easily die." She let the word linger in the air as she stared the brats down one by one. The seriousness of the lesson seemed to have sunk in now. "Look at your new partner. Unlike with dragons there is no life-bond with a firelizard. They can and will leave if neglected or abused. Now, since I know none of you want that to happen we will begin to discuss how to keep your firelizard happy and healthy. As with all life, there are certain nutrients a firelizard needs during developement. Be sure to provide yours with fresh meat, uncooked. The ladies in the kitchen might be willing to provide it for you under the condition you keep your flitter out of the kitchen unless accompanied by you." ---- The brown had slept well. Better than she had, that was for sure. Her parents had been really angry for the last sevenday. It was the first time in her young life she had actually been hit by her father and as much as she resented him for it she still knew she had been in the wrong. Had they not been trying to keep her out of trouble lately. Her latest stunt of sneaking out, stealing firelizard eggs and setting a stampede of herdbeasts on the weyr was completely unexpected and frowned upon even by some of her younger siblings. "Why can't you behave?" Her mother asked her in agitated frustration a few days earlier. Since then she had had trouble sleeping well. And then last night when she came home after sneaking out again, she got the same discussion two fold. Jinx, who she already felt the emotions of seemed to understand her sadness and snuggled next to her on the bed but not on Momma cat's end. The white tunnel cat had found a comfortable spot curled up partially enclosed by the girl's legs. The cat and the flit were asleep in no time unlike Seirsha. She spent a good number of candlemarks reflecting on what her mother said. Why couldn't she behave? No matter the reason, she knew that nothing her parents said or wished could change her. In the morning her mother came in again and told her to get up and dressed. The girl was barely dressed when her mother shoved a redfruit into her hand and some meat for the firelizard then ushered her out into the hall. "The Headwoman said you are to report to the Hatching Caverns in half a candlemark. You should arrive on time." The blonde girl sighed. Her brown firelizard, whom she named Jinx since it seemed no matter what he attempted to do, he failed in some way or another, rested in the crook of her free arm. When she arrived at the Hatching Cavern, eyes still heavy from sleep, she noted what seemed like a lone figure in the middle of the sands. Who was there? She wondered to herself. Once she drew closer she knew. Dragon shield, red hair, gold firelizard, jungle feline... it was Kyrah. Other questions began to buzz around in her head but she was too nervous to ask. Kyrah commanded the Caverns attention so much so that she didn't even bother asking any of the others how they were when they came in. She barely spared any of them a glance. What was all this about? When it was exactly the time to start, not waiting for any latecomers Kyrah began to explain the meeting. They were learning to care for their new pets. How hard could it be? She stopped herself from making a snide remark. Somehow, the more Kyrah talked, the more nervous about the kind of care she would provide Jinx now. Maybe she was not a fit firelizard owner just yet. The woman had her attention. She wanted her firelizard to know commands like Eve did. One never knew when a well trained flit might come in handy. Especially when one considered the amount of mischief she seemed to be getting into lately.

Megdela sat in a seat when she arrived. She had been woken up extra early by her mother to arrive on time. She didn't know what this was all about before she came here her mother didn't say anything but that she had to go and be there on time. Cye rode in her pocket and muched on the meat roll she put there for him. He always loved exploring her pockets first thing in the morning for goodies. It was a game that the two of them enjoyed in the mornings since he had hatched.
Megdela always was very quiet and observed everything. She would have no trouble paying great attention to everything Kyrah said. She really wanted Cye to grow up nice and strong and be with her forever. She was very careful not to hurt him. But she din't know a lot of things that he needed like these things called nutrients. She knew fresh meat was good and her mother made her do things in the kitchen to get the meat for her Cye. But she though and she might not be giving him enough raw meat. She was gonna have to pay more attention to that. She smiled as Cye climbed up and perched on her shoulder and acted like he too was paying close attention to the lesson. She never meet a firelizard as curious as her Cye.

Kyrah. The name was a familiar one and while Prontin knew she had met the woman at least once before, she also knew it was in brief passing. The woman was part of the Dragon Shield. She was active, powerful, confident and important. Everything the blind harper would never be with her disability. When Prontin had been told that she would be taking a class with the Weyrbrats that would be taught by Kyrah… well for the first time in her life, Prontin considered faking sick to get out of it. Needless to say, she was intimidated before she was even lead onto the sands by her brother Filkos.
The sands were warm on her feet, almost hot but in a very comforting way to the woman who had such poor circulation to begin with. Knowing far too well Prontin’s own disorientation in wide open spaces had thoughtfully carried a chair with him and set it down in the sands near the rest of those gathered to give the blind woman a solid object in the vast emptiness that was the Hatching Sands. Seated with the two firelizards she had been mistakenly given (By the egg, one was a challenge enough for her!), Prontin nodded to her brother that she would be okay and listened to him leave across the sands.
At the sound of Kyrah’s voice, however, Prontin’s palms began to instantly sweat in nervousness. She knew all too well that she was the oldest one here being taught today but there was no reason to lie to herself and think that she would have the advantage because of it. No, she knew she would struggle to grasp the concepts of training the two soft and warm little lizards in her lap. She knew that as soon as Kyrah said to look at their Firelizards and all Prontin found was the same black darkness that surrounded her everyday life.
It was the gentle croon of one of the little lizards – the blue maybe? – that kept a tear from rolling down the woman’s face in silent frustration and sadness. No, she’d find a way to overcome this obstacle as well, just like she had to learn to play her Violin. And she’d have the help of the two little lizards upon her lap that already seemed to understand when she was happy or sad. How curious.

The boys were up bright and early, long before dawn really, when the day for their first Flitter class with Kyrah came around. D’seus and Zorometh had more than made sure of it, neither boy would be late, in groggily they had dressed and gotten something to eat before heading over to the lower caverns. Once they’d each stuffed a couple of rolls down their mouth, as well as a generous amount of raw wherry meat for both firelizards with them, Hinuk and Thoran had made a bee-line for the Hatching Caverns, entering it just as the first rays of dawn begun to filter in through the entrance and Eve chirped in greetings to the young hatchlings. They’d arrived shortly after Seirsha, both boys mumbling a soft greeting to the girl before standing before Kyrah. Another Brat Pack member, one of the youngest, had arrived as well along with an older woman neither boy really recognized. Still, there were clearly some Brat Pack members missing still, though that didn’t seem to bother Kyrah one bit as she started her lesson right there and then. Wisely neither boy made any form of comment to disrupt the class, Kyrah really wasn’t a woman one wished to mess around with – and that jungle feline of hers always did made Hinuk just a little bit extra careful. More than once the woman had come to their rescue really, the last time having been in these same sands... though both boys made sure to not dwell too much on that train of thought. On Thoran’s neck rested Belior, the calm and laid back bronze content to just lay there as he seemed to study all his surroundings. Over by Hinuk Shrieker had already begin to move, hissing silently to her benefactor as the boy turned to look at the annoyance that was his when Kyrah instructed. It even seemed the green was about to swipe at his face, until the somewhat stern but gentle croon of her bronze brother nearby made the green think otherwise. With what would count as a snort the firelizard flared her good wing before turning her head away from Hinuk’s gaze; instead crawling down his arm and wrapping around his left wrist almost in a snake-like manner. The blond just rolled his eyes slightly, ignoring the green menace for the time being as she remained attached to his limb. At least she wasn’t amusing herself this time around by biting his knuckles and fingers...

When Karevel had joined the others in stealing the firelizard eggs, she had given no thought to the fact that she knew nothing about caring for a firelizard. It hadn't really been a concern to her. All she had been thinking about was the idea of owning her very own firelizard. Even after the lizard, which she had aptly named Clover (which was easily the first thing that had popped into her head when she needed a name for the creature) had hatched and bonded to her, Karevel hadn't been too concerned about caring for her. It just wasn't something that seemed like it needed worrying over.
Now, however, she evidently needed to learn, for she was expected to come to a lesson on firelizard care. Karevel didn't mind. Sure, there were better, more interesting things to do, but at least this could help her take care of Clover better, and that was something she did want to do. So it was that Karevel headed towards this required lesson in firelizards with Clover perched atop her shoulder, brimming as happily as ever. The Hatching Cavern was not full by any means, but there were others there already. Kyrah was there, likely to teach them. She had Eve by her and a feline on her other side. Karevel considered that creature for a moment before ignoring it and sitting down.
It was a while longer before Kyrah began to talk. She sounded a bit to serious for Karevel's taste. The young girl was too naive to imagine that something could happen to Clover. She had never much heard of firelizards falling ill, and she couldn't imagine it happening to Clover. She was a bit confused when Kyrah glared at her sternly, but assumed the woman was just annoyed they had snuck off with Eve's eggs.
Karevel did intend to listen and pay attention, but she also found the idea of Clover leaving a bit silly. And there was no way she would ever not take care of Clover, so then there would never be a reason for the firelizard to leave, right? Perhaps the real reason they needed this lesson, then, was just so they learned to take care of the firelizard. But if that was what it was for, then maybe they should get to that point rather than talk about why. Karevel didn't really need a reason to take care of Clover. Just the firelizard herself was enough.

With a heavy sneeze Bahari jolted himself awake and sat up abruptly. The sudden movement and noise startled Look-See something fierce, and with an unholy shriek, the Bronze had propelled himself upwards a startling height in order to cling to the rough ceiling with puffed wings and small hisses. Bahari's head was still a bit stuffy, but at least today he felt as if breathing would not be too much of a problem. The only reason his parents hadn't whipped him senseless was because thy knew that his recent bout of sick had kept him in bed. Although they had given him a very serious talking to about his choice of companions.
Bahari's mother had set a plate of soup out for him, and the warmth of the bowl made him realize just how early he had woken up. Taking the sturdy wood in his hands, Bahari drank his breakfast with slow and steady swallows. His throat wasn't bothering him to much anymore, but it wouldn't be a good idea to push things too far so soon.
Look-See had slowly crept back towards Bahari so that the huge Bronze could perch on Bahari's head in order to peer down into the viscous soup. Bahari finished his soup and tapped his new pet on its nose as he placed his bowl back on the bed-table.
"I'll get you something better from the kitchen. You wouldn't like broth."
Sighing, Bahari shifted out of his warm blankets and slipped the pair of socks he kept at the end of his bed onto his feet. He used to hate touching the cold floor in the morning, so he decide to never have to again. After getting up, Bahari dressed with the slow lethargy of one recovering from sickness.
Once dressed, Bahari made his bed with precision and meticulous care before nabbing his dirty bowl and heading towards the kitchen where he deposited it and grabbed some proper meat for Look-See. Then he headed down to the Sands where he would be attending a class on his new pet. He only hoped the instructor wouldn't be too mad. His mom hadn't even wanted him to go, hence the lack of a wake-up call. Still, Bahari needed to learn how Look-See could be cared for.
Upon shuffling onto the sands and slumping into a chair with the Bronze still atop his head, Bahari miserably realized he had missed the beginning of the lecture. Idly, he hoped it wasn't important.

Kyrah could tell they all wanted to get to the part where she told them how to care for their firelizards. So she moved ahead with the lesson. She was not a teacher so she didn’t see how any of them were going to learn a damned thing from this but she had to do as she was told. Much like they did. And now if anything happened to the flitters she would feel responsible. “As for bathing, your firelizards do have hides, like dragons. At their young ages they will need to be bathed a few times a week. Since you are all young I don’t see why you could not bathe them daily. They tend to like water so this should not be a problem.” Kyrah was not sure what to say to Prontin, she would need more help than the others being unable to see them. The flits should tell her when or if something was bothering them though. “Nutrition and bathing are only part of the battle raising a flitter. They seem to attract mischief. However they can be trained not to. Firelizards are food driven creatures. You can get them to do just about anything if you promise them fresh meat.” She paused a moment, there were quite a few humans in the room who attracted mischief too. Pairing them with firelizards was one of the worst ideas she had ever heard of. There was only one thing she could do now though and that was to educate them enough so that they were capable of keeping the flits out of trouble and danger. “The most important training device is for them to come to you when you want them to. Now for most of you this will be difficult. Bronzes and Golds have an easier time with learning things but even they require practice and repetition. We are going to learn this trick today. I’ll explain as well as I can. The longer you are with your bonded lizard the easier it will be to connect with them." "First I want you to put an image in your mind of where you want your firelizard to be. It needs to be a clear image and they need to be able to walk to where you want them to go. Prontin, I’ll show you a different way after the lesson.” She added a bit more quietly so the whole group was not aware of the woman’s disability. “Do you all have that image? Now put your firelizard in the image.” Kyrah added waiting for them to get that part clear in their minds. As they did, some of the firelizards would comprehend what the owner wanted of them, some of them might take some food to put them in the place they needed to be. “If your firelizard went to the spot you thought of, reward them.” Kyrah said as she brought around a bucket of thinly chopped meat. “It may take them some time to figure out what you want but they are young yet. Some will take minutes and some will take days.” “Another helpful trick that I want you to practice before they start flying is terrain recognition.” She looked around, “Can anyone tell me what that means?” They may or may not know but this was a technique teachers used to see if people were paying attention.

Megdela raised her hand. " It that to recognize places they where and places they are going to. Cause you can't go somewhere that you don't know how to get to if you have never been. " She asked softly. She had tried hard to get Cye to go to the table but at first all he did was peek out of her pocket and go around to the other one to explore. He defently was too curious for his own good. She wondered if that would be a problem with him being curious. She'd have to ask the teacher about that after the class was over.

Prontin listened, hanging onto every word spoken by the intimidating woman who was teaching the class on Firelizard training and care. Even so and despite how hard she tried, the blind drudge could not help but find herself floundering with no comprehension when the woman actually began to walk the children through their first lesson. Their very first task and already it was something Prontin could not take part in with the children.
So simple, children can do it, but I am left in the dark… She thought to herself as the woman spoke of developing a picture in their mind, then putting the flitter inside it. Prontin was too well aware that her ‘sight’ was nothing like those who could actually use their eyes. Her world was made up of sounds and textures, of carefully counted steps, and measured rooms. Her whole world was as far as her arms could reach, or as far as her ears could hear.
Besides the sand beneath her feet and the chair she sat in, Prontin knew that there were others in the room but she could not tell you how far away they were. She could make a guess as to how many and where they sat, but her judge of distance was always off and it always depended on how softly spoken each person was as well. She had no idea if there were other chairs or even any tables set up upon the hatching sands.
And so it was that when she heard the comforting croon come from her lap, she reached down to find Velvet butting his little head against her fingertips, asking to be caressed. It had taken some time with R’gar to be able to tell the two flits apart when she could only be touching one at a time, but after much practice, Prontin began to recognize that the little bronze had a softer hide than the blue – thus giving him the name Velvet.
The little blue, on the other hand, was smaller with a rougher hide, but he was also braver and louder in his acts. She had named him Courage after spending three candle marks listening to the blue trying to pounce on the bronze’s tail. Of course, it had taken her that long to figure out what was happening, but in the end it had brought a smile to her face as she had finally found the name for him.
