Suynie felt numb as she sat astride her magnificent queen. The rain that poured down from above was soaking through the tunic and breeches that she had on and spreading chills across her skin. Where was she to go? What was she to do? Suynie had never imagined that Issarith would rise before Rhiannoth so she'd not made any plans for a place to go, or something to do, should the small queen rise.
Can you imagine what the flight will be like? I'll be surprised if the tiny queen doesn't get crushed by her much larger chasers. Suynie spoke to Rhiannoth as the gold flew them away from the Weyr.
Indeed, she is so very, very small. Her eggs will look like those of a firelizard. There was obvious humor in Rhiannoth's voice, but no jealousy. Rhiannoth was a Queen, and not even the rising of a gold from the past could shake her of her confidence, I know of a place on the beach where we can go if you would like. The gold suggested, passing the mental image to her rider.
Even from a distance, Suynie could hear the echo of a screaming gold, challenging the Weyr, Let's go.
--
The beach was empty, and the rain was only a light drizzle there. Rhiannoth was kind enough to prop her wing up so that Suynie could sit beneath it, sheltered from the soft rain. The sand was velvety and cold beneath her, the waves grey and lapping lightly at the shore as they crashed.
When I rise it will not be in the rain. Nothing will hinder that moment. Rhiannoth promised, I will create a large clutch and bring strength back to the Weyr. The gold's eyes whirled in contentment, bewildering Suynie as she searched the gold's thoughts and feelings and found not a single trace of jealousy, or resentment towards the demanding, little queen back at Refuge.
Why aren't you upset? Suynie wondered.
Why should I be? This is the way things work. Regardless of who is considered the 'senior' queen, I am the one that will strength the Weyr, and Elynth after me. Issarith's hatchlings will not be as big, or as strong as the dragons that Elynth and I will produce. It is simply the way things are. Let Issarith and her rider have the stress of being 'Senior', we will enjoy the perks of being a Junior Weyrwoman.
Rhiannoth's reasoning made Suynie smile, it was so very like her gold to be that way. The queen rarely got into a nasty temper because she usually felt such things were 'beneath her'.
Suynie had mixed feelings about Sakorai becoming Senior Weyrwoman. On one hand, it certainly took a lot of stress and pressure off of Suynie's shoulders and that made her relieved that Issarith had risen first. On the other hand, Sakorai knew nothing about the Weyr or how it worked, the time she'd left was completely different than the time she was in currently. Suynie shrugged, Sakorai had been a Junior Weyrwoman for Turns, she was sure the older goldrider would figure it out. There would be the Weyrleader there to direct her if she needed it.
See, being a junior is not such a bad thing, hm? There was a humorous tint to the gold's voice.
I think you're right, Rhiannoth. This might be better than I thought.
