The late afternoon air was warmer than he liked it but Or’yn was consoled by the feel of a slight breeze. It was actually perfect for what he had just planned. Rath however was having second thoughts before they had even started. Why exactly am I having the Queenrider meet us at the lake?I told you. I need to talk to her. What makes you think she is going to come? Maybe she won’t. The young man shrugged. Just send the message will you? Dragons. Pah. Why couldn’t he have impressed something more malleable to his will? [ color=9e9e00]For one you wouldn’t be pursuing young Queenriders.
[/color] Well it was a reason, the dragon thought smugly before passing his rider’s message on to Elynth. Elynth.Rath’s mental tone was quiet in case the Queen was sleeping or otherwise engaged. Would you and Marlaey like to come to the lake with Or’yn and I? We’re heading there now.[/b] The invitation sent, Rath turned his head to see Or’yn combing his mess of black hair. The young man knew it was hopeless but at least he had tried. He might as well have just slept on it. There was no indication the comb was doing any good. Leaving the comb alone he walked to the ledge where Rath was waiting, as patient as Or’yn was impatient. Within minutes they were sitting next to the lake waiting. Where most people would not think it out of the ordinary to see Or’yn by the lake, relaxing, it was anything but an ordinary day. After Rath trying to catch Rhiannoth, the bronzerider had been unable to talk to Marlaey about it. Sure he had wanted to but the right moment never came along and they had both been super busy. He’d just decided about a candlemark ago that they needed to talk and not like they normally did. Or’yn was not avoiding topics today and he was not going to let Marlaey dart around the things she was really thinking either. They needed to have a real, grown up, conversation. He might be young, she might be young but whatever they felt was between them they each needed to say something. He was tired of acting like the good friend. They were good friends but he knew there was more. Even at seventeen he knew there was more than friendship there. Or’yn’s spontaneity was nothing new. He was used to doing things when the thought came upon him. He was tired of the status quo. It was time to shake things up a little in his life. Besides his mother was going to wonder soon why he wasn’t trying to pursue any young women. Or’yn had a close relationship with his parents and his sister so it was nothing to him that his mother poked her nose into his business. Looking out at the lake, he took in a deep breath, trying to calm his overactive thought process. Marlaey not being interested in him had not crossed his mind, a fact which Rath saw fit to point out to the young rider. She might not feel anything but friendship for you mine. Are you certain you want to talk about this now? If not now, when? Better to speak up and be hurt. You are a very strange little human. The bronzerider grinned. You wouldn’t know what to do without my wisdom. Wisdom or insanity? Sometimes I think the two are one and the same. Silly boy. The dragon really hoped his was not in for a world of hurt. Rath did not like his rider to be in pain of any kind. [/blockquote]

Elynth was stretched out on her weyr ledge, taking in all the heat the day had to offer. She felt so free lately due to the clutchings and hatchings of her fellow golds. Neither she nor Marlaey had to worry about any of that as long as they stayed well enough away. She purred happily to herself, her wings resting outstretched on her glorious orange gold hide.
Marlaey was safe and sound in her weyr catching up on some reading. Though she was the youngest of the goldriders she still had to maintain the standard of her rank. So while everyone was busy with the eggs and queens, she was brushing up on her knowledge of the records and the goings on of the weyr from the point of view of her position.
It still felt strange sometimes to be a queenrider, people always greeted her with such respect in their voices, vying for her attention and asking her opinions occasionally. But compared to the attention Suynie and Sakorai received, she felt like she got off quite easily.
As she was deciphering a particularly detailed paragraph pertaining to the feeding of a pregnant dragon, Marlaey felt Elynth move slightly, making her look up. What is it love? she asked curiously. Elynth raised her own head, peering in at her rider, pleasure spilling through their mental link.
Rath asks if we might like to join him and his rider on a trip to the lake.
Marlaey beamed at her golden dragon, "Really? It feels like I haven't seen either of them in such a long time! Please tell Rath we'd be delighted to see them and that we'll meet them down by the water." Elynth mantled her wings and reached out to Rath's mind with ease. We would love to accompany both of you, we will meet you at the lake as soon as my rider is ready she said, a touch of amusement in her mind as she flashed an image of Marlaey struggling to fix her hair to the bronze dragon. Humans were so funny sometimes.

Or’yn for all his bravado when he left his weyr was starting to wonder if maybe Rath was right once more. The dragon seemed to know everything before Or’yn did but on the same token there were things which Or’yn was better at dealing with than his dragon. They had never been as similar as other dragon-rider pairs. Differences in opinion was a normal, every day occurrence. This feeling in his gut was better to aknowledge at this point than any doubts he might feel. Never one to dwell on the negative, Or’yn smiled at the Bronze. “Well?”
They come. He was going to ruin their chances when it came time for Elynth to rise. Rath was almost certain his rider was going to ruin things for them. Dragons didn’t waste time on silly emotions. They were much more logical about things and Rath more than most. “Told you they would.” He said, with that silly, stupid grin still on his face. Rath would smack it off if he could.
Humans are curious creatures. Mine is most strange at times. Rath agreed with the Gold, trying not to let his rider’s contagious excitement enter his mind voice too much but still there was a hint of it when the Bronze spoke. He liked Elynth. Sadly he was not the only one who did. HE had many Bronzes to compete with for the Queen’s affections. That was the way of the Weyr, so no matter how his rider felt for hers, he had much more work to do to impress the Gold. Or’yn was going to realize just how much competition they had soon enough so Rath decided to push the issue no further. If he wanted to be foolish and pour his heart out that was his affair.
Or’yn’s excitement and nerves were ill contained. He was practically pacing waiting for Marlaey and Elynth to arrive. The words he had been rehearsing in his head were now a jumbled mess. He was going to wing it. Shrugging to himself he figured he was better at being compulsive than planning things anyway. The words would come to him when he needed them. Right? Short one. Don’t tell me you are abandoning your plan? Yup. I think its for the best The dragon’s anxiety was now much worse. No real plan, no words at the ready. His was sabotaging this on purpose! “Pfft! Now Rath, have I ever let you down before?”
They both knew the answer to that. Yes. Not when its important! Or’yn figured he might sound stuffy with prerehearsed words. This way he would sound more genuine. The sound of Rath’s new monologue about how this was going to fail was brushed to the back of Or’yn’s mind. For all he was young and smaller than any other Bronzerider, he had a very strong will. He watched, waiting for the most beautiful young woman at the Weyr to meet him. This would go well. He had no doubts, the confident optimism shown through the stormy doubts his dragon had enhanced. Things would be in the open now. No more pretending to not feel anything special. He was so ready for this to be something more than friendship.

Once Marlaey was satisfied with how her soft short hair had settled, she grinned and ran over to drape Elynth's saddle across her. You know that the wind will just tangle your hair up again don't you love? the gold hummed mockingly. But Marlaey shook her head, "It had to be brushed so that it will look windswept after our quick flight. Otherwise it would just look messy." The golden queen rumbled with mirth as her rider climbed up onto her neck and settled into position.
Elynth could feel the echoes of Or'yn's excitement through her link with Rath. Her eyes swirled a bright green as she responded to their feelings.
Leaping from their weyr Marlaey and Elynth both revelled in the wondrous thrill of flying together. As the wind rushed passed them, Marlaey was glad to be leaving her books behind and to be heading for a relaxing afternoon with her bronzerider friend.
Friend.
Marlaey felt the familiar butterflies flutter in her stomach at the thought of Or'yn. She knew what was expected of her rank and that one day her queen would Rise, but would it be Rath that caught her? Maraey truly hoped so.. Because if he did, then maybe Or'yn would feel the same way for her as she did for him...
Her thoughts were interrupted when Elynth trilled to Rath and his rider as she spiralled down in circles, closer and closer to the lake. She had a fleeting memory of swimming out here with the bronze when she was much younger, and then she landed with a great thump on the grassy bank. Marlaey looked down to see Or'yn pacing and smiled as she waved to him and Rath.
Sliding down Elynth's side she quickly unbuckled the gold's saddle so as to free her up in case she wanted to swim. Thank you little one. Have you noticed the beautiful cloud patterns? Marlaey hid a smile, she was used to her dragon commenting on seemingly random things. Of course dearheart.
"Hi there," she called as she stepped over to Or'yn, "I'm so glad to be out in the fresh air at last!"

Rath was, as usual the one to act with the most formality out of the four of them. Elynth was quite lucky she was not in a position where she would be vying for the Role of Senior at the Weyr. Rath did not ever overstep his bounds and tell his the Queen was strange. She was always happy, playful; in all ways much more fun than either of the other Queens at the Weyr. Marlaey he had always approved of. She had at least acted a little more appropriately than his rider. But it seemed that was all in the past. She was practically jumping of the Gold to see his rider. Not that he minded in the least but he was so concerned with what was about to happen that he almost wished he would not be here to witness it. Better to not pay attention to his very foolish, young rider and speak with a much more interesting, dragon.
Greetings Elynth. He called over to the young Queen as Or’yn walked towards Marlaey. A little caught up in the moment the Bronzerider didn’t stop in front of her as he usually did. This time he was going for it. His arms wrapped around her as she said how glad she was to be outside. “I feel like we haven’t seen each other in ages.” Or’yn added as he pulled away from the hug. If he seemed at all distracted it was because he was still unsure of how to approach the subject. Rath had urged him to be cautious but it was not in Or’yn’s nature to be.
He was going to do things the Or’yn way. “So, I actually wanted to talk about something with you, in person. Which is why I wanted to meet you here, since it’s a good place to talk and Elynth likes the lake.” He said as a segway into what he was planning on actually talking about. Explaining why they were here would have been a good start to begin with. Or’yn was still standing fairly close to Marlaey, the slight breeze wafted the smell of her over to him. Faranth this was going to be hard if she rejected him. He was not the tallest, most ambitious or even most good looking Bronzerider at the WEyr and perhaps that was what Rath had been hinting at all along. He had the best competition for her affections. There were so many things that could go wrong here but he had promised himself he wouldn’t back out of this. She needed to know before Elynth began to really flirt with the Bronzes and she had decisions to make.
“We’ve been good friends for, well longer than I can remember and I’ve always felt we could confide anything in one another.” Or’yn’s easy smile was gone, for the moment a more serious Or’yn had shown himself; One that was rarely seen. Maybe Rath had been right, he thought as he felt tension in the air around him. “When Rhiannoth flew and Rath decided to give chase I was, I confess, unsure of what to do. Not because I did not want to ever have Rath fly anyone. I couldn’t focus on the flight. My thoughts and feelings were on someone else. It made me realize something that affects us. I should have told you sooner.” Or’yn paused, wanting to make the words count for something. He had never said them to anyone who was not family. “I love you.” His brown eyes searched her face in hopes that he was not the only one who felt this way.

Elynth mantled her wings with all the grace she could muster, knowing how polite and formal Rath generally was. She nodded to him amiably, Greetings to you too Rath, I hope you are well. She rumbled with joy and stepped forward easily to nuzzle his neck in affection momentarily. She was just being herself, but she knew it might ruffle him a little, which she found amusing. Her eyes flashed greens and blues as she looked to him and then over the sparkling water. Or'yn was right, she did indeed like the lake, it was so vast and beautiful.
Marlaey meanwhile had reached Or'yn and was surprised to find herself quickly wrapped in his arms. She blushed automatically, but found herself hugging back gladly. He was right, it did feel like a long time since they'd seen each other. As he pulled away from her she couldn't help but move to stay with him unconsciously, having to swiftly pull herself back and hope he didn't notice such a movement. She looked down at the grass, trying to hide her embarrassment. Elynth merely chuckled in the back of her mind.
When Or'yn started talking again Marlaey looked up. He had something to talk to her about? She frowned slightly. He seemed so serious, not like himself at all. Reaching out to her gold she tried to find out from her if Rath was feeling the same way. Was there something wrong? Rath is as polite and accommodating as ever Marlaeylove, what is it you seek? But Marlaey didn't know. She had no idea what Or'yn wanted to talk to her about and her worst fears were materialising unbidden in her mind. What if they couldn't see each other anymore because of his training? What if he was going to the other weyr? What if he wanted her to stop acting such a fool around him? Had he noticed her feelings towards him..? Did he want her to leave him alone..?
Yes, sometimes Marlaey really was a girl. And she reacted to this situation just like one; freaking out and blowing it out of proportion in her mind. However, unlike most girl's she managed to keep the craziness inside, only her confused expression and worried eyes gave any indication of the emotions running around her head. She was so wrapped up in her own fears that she was finding it hard to pay attention to the bronzerider. Why was he talking about Rhiannoth's flight? It had hurt her that Rath flew to try and catch her, she didn't want to think about that day any more. It was as the weyr demanded, but it had still made her feel awful. Did Or'yn have to remind her? But as her eyes met his, her forehead creased in bewilderment, he spoke words she never thought she'd hear.
Elynth craned her head around to look at the human pair near herself and Rath. She felt her rider's disorientation, her emotions flooding through her, engulfing herself and her dragon. The young gold had known from the start how her lifemate felt towards Rath's, but the gir;l had never truly admitted it, even to herself. And no it was out in the open. Elynth wrapped the tip of her tail around Marlaey, whispering, Try not to fall, love... Her eyes fell on Or'yn for a moment. She wanted to speak to him directly, to tell him not to hurt her rider. But now was not the time. Things were messy enough. Raising her gaze back to Rath she said, with a tinge of humour, You had no part in this at all did you?
Marlaey could only stare at Or'yn, eyes brimming with tears. She felt her knees give way and she was glad Elynth's tail was there to guide her safely down to the grass. Such a dramatic reaction, she felt so embarrassed! But he had said.. Did he really mean it? Her mouth shaped her thoughts before she could control herself, "Do.. do you really mean it..?", she asked, her voice faint. Without waiting for an answer, a tear trickling down her blushing cheeks, she gasped, "I love you too Or'yn..."

He answered promptly, as a Bronze should a queen. I am well. More than well with you here, Elynth. He might be laying it on a bit thicker than usual but what his rider was about to do was going to lose his shot with the Gold if he didn’t at least try to show her that he thought the world of her.
Stupid, foolish little human! The Bronze fumed beneath his calm exterior. Despite his love for his rider, Rath found this to not be going as he planned. The young woman was tense, even he could feel that, just think of what sorts of emotional turmoil the girl was putting beautiful Elynth through? He did not want to know how it was going to end but then again he needed to hear the whole conversation. As Or’yn continued to talk and beat around the bush, the young woman became more and more nervous. Most Definitely not my idea. The Bronze insisted, thinking the Gold must find his rider very foolish.
He’d killed her. That’s what went through the Bronze’s mind as the girl fell to the ground.
Or’yn for his part hung on every last breath as he waited for her to respond one way or another. It seemed to take her an eternity to register any emotion other than bewilderment. Or’yn was not so sure that was a good sign but then what did he know about girls? She was crying and then falling down! Crap! That couldn’t be good could it? But then she was smiling too and saying the very words that would redeem him in Rath’s eyes.
This time he pulled her up and brought her in close with no intention of letting her go, planting a kiss on her cheek where the tear had fallen before lifting her in the air and swinging her around. “Of course I love you, silly. Do you see me spending copious amounts of time with any other beautiful, funny, intelligent Goldriders?” He set her down, the grin on his face was pretty much permanent for the evening. See Rath. I’m right, sometimes!
I suppose. I’m right more though. “Now, what would you like to do today? We can go anywhere, do anything we want to do.” At least that was how he felt. He would do anything she wanted. Except maybe grovel. He was not fond of groveling.

Elynth was more than pleased with Rath's compliments. Though all the bronze's were polite and eager to please her, Rath had always made it known that he actually enjoyed her company. She felt good when he was around. Perhaps he would make a good weyrmate some day? She snorted in amusement, he would have to fly strong and fast to win her though, she wouldn't be caught easily, oh no!
She sensed Rath's discomfort with the whole situation and grinned slightly, showing her white teeth. No need to fret Rath dear, they are just being humans she hummed to him as Marlaey's happiness cascaded over her. She had been worried for her rider at first, but now that both she and Rath's had expressed their affections for each other at last, all would be well.
Reaching out for the bronzerider's mind, Elynth took the opportunity her rank permitted to her and spoke to him directly, I am pleased you have made my rider feel so happy Rath's, she said amiably to him, allowing him to feel the gushing emotions from both her and her rider, please do not hurt her. She wanted to mention that she'd tear him apart if he did, but Marlaey had taught her something about when it was best to hold her tongue recently. Instead the golden dragon flicked Rath with her tail playfully and hummed deeply.
Before Marlaey had time to fear an unfavourable reaction, Or'yn had swooped down and pulled her into his arms again, picking her up and twirling her around. His words made her blush even further, but her smile grew wider too until at last she laughed with pure joy.
Elynth! Elynth! He loves me! He said it! He said he means it!
I heard him love. Does this mean you'll stop bottling up all those feelings now?
Marlaey bit back a smile and looked up at her dragon, I guess so...
Gazing at Or'yn as though she wanted to imprint every feature of his into her mind forever, Marlaey beamed at him, unable to think past this moment. "What would I like to do? I don't know! As long as I can spend it with you..." She was lost in his eyes again. Elynth suddenly bugled loudly, Into the lake! We are here and we shall swim!
