“Ah, Good Afternoon.” He said in response to the new young woman walking in. Three young ladies had now come in to speak with him for candidacy and to S’nuo it was clear to see that these three were at least prompt. That was a good trait for any dragonrider to have and he gave her a welcoming smile for it. Putting what he had learned about the last candidate to the back of his mind for later, he gave his attention to the young woman now in his office.
Taking in her height, potential age and her brown hair, S’nuo found his talent working well for him as her name blessed the tip of his tongue when called upon. His knack for names was something he would never regret.
“Yes, I did wish to see everyone today. Therion, if I’m not mistaken.” He said, stepping forward to greet her properly with an open hand to offer a handshake. With his other hand, he offered her one of the open and available chairs. “I wanted to get to meet each one of my candidates and learn a little more about you.”

Therion smiled as he moved forward, and she accepted his handshake. "Yes, it is Therion," she replied. It was nice that he knew her name, at least. She couldn't imagine that a Candidate Master should be allowed to forget those kinds of things, even if he had just gotten the job. She sat down as gracefully as she could manage, and looked around the room with some interest. It seemed relatively neat to her, not that it really mattered too much. Then again, S'nuo hadn't exactly been doing this for the last few Turns. Maybe he just hadn't had time to make the place a mess yet. Still, he didn't seem like the type to be overly sloppy with his things. Of course, you probably had to be neat to be in charge of Candidates, and be able to tell them off for not keeping their areas neat. Of course, Therion always did. Her space had to stay nice and tidy and presentable so she wouldn't get in trouble for it. Chores were a nuisance, but keeping her area clean was simply a good thing to do. Otherwise someone would look in and wonder what kind of slob lived there. She could hardly wonder that about other people if she, too, was being messy. So instead she kept everything nice and clean.
"Well, what did you want to know about?" Oh, the things she could tell him. Of course, some things were best left unsaid, but if he wanted to hear about her, Therion certainly wouldn't mind talking. She would just have to work hard to make sure that what she was saying didn't sound like complaints. She wasn't complaining, after all. It wasn't her fault that silly Gold dragon had messed up when choosing her rider. Hopefully the next one would choose wisely. Until then, she really did seem to be stuck here. Therion knew she wasn't the only girl here who had come to Impress the Gold, but the rest were inconsequential. Even Lyndel. They were just here, hoping that they could be worthy. She, Therion, was. It would just take a bit of waiting and some more patience (although she felt she had had plenty of patience already). And while she was waiting, she might as well get to know the new Candidate Master, since she would be with him for a while, at least until the next Gold egg was laid, and the dragon inside choose Hers sensibly.

Hearing the young lady get right to the point even as she took in the room around them, he smiled and took the second free chair on the same side of the desk. Folding his hands together, he gave her a bit of explanation along with his answer. After all, knowing the why behind the reasoning often gave people more willingness to work with plans.
“With the red star so bright on the horizon, every dragon will be needed soon for threadfall. Because of that, I won’t be able to hold as many classes as the previous Candidate Master. In order to keep everyone’s hands busy and learning, I’m going to pair each candidate with a craftsman throughout the Weyr. Riders with craft knowledge are very valuable to the Weyr.”
Leaning back in his chair, he unlaced his hands and held one out to her palm up in way of offering her opinion on the matter. “What I’d like to hear from my Candidate’s is if you have any skill or previous craft knowledge. Perhaps you have a craft you would prefer to shadow.”

Yes, everyone did say that Thread was on its way. Therion wasn't completely sure as to what this would entail, but she did know it meant there would be more clutches, and more Gold eggs as well. Personally, she could only think of this as a good thing, even if most people were gloomy when they talked about it. Dragons were there to fight Thread, so they must have been prepared for it, if it was what they were born to do. Bigger clutches was just a bonus, really. And she also didn't mind hearing that there would be less classes. She'd always hated those. Sitting around, listening to some dragonrider talk constantly about the Weyr and dragons and such had become rather dull after a while, although it had certainly beat all the chores they were given.
Then the catch came. They had to learn a craft. Therion had to think about that one. It sounded like a lot of work, and it was going to be coupled with all the other work she was going to be given. Apparently, though, her option was either to do that or to go home. Maybe it would prove interesting, but she was going to be a Weyrwoman, and Weyrwomen didn't need to know a craft. They just had to lead the Weyr, and crafts weren't involved in that. Therion didn't really see the point in getting involved in something that would only be temporary. She wasn't about to do a lot of work on something like that after she had Impressed. And she didn't care what he said about knowing a craft being valuable. That was for other people, not Goldriders. They were too busy for crafts!
Well, whatever. She had no choice but to humor him over this. And as soon as she Impressed, she could forget about all of this craft nonsense. "Well, I grew up on a farm, but I don't have any specific craft knowledge. I did a few different things, I suppose. Looked after my younger siblings, and some clothes-making." She frowned slightly, thinking about it. "Not that I really want to do either of those anymore." She'd always hated having to do that stuff. She was here for the dragons. She didn't really want to get involved in this other nonsense. "I think I'd prefer a craft that had more to do with dragons, actually." Maybe she could actually use knowledge on something like that someday. She certainly wasn't going to take any of the skills she had learned at home to the next level. She was trying to leave her home behind, after all.

It was not only in the way Therion had phrased that she no longer wanted to do her crafts she had learned back home, but also in the way her face betrayed her emotions. It was clear to S’nuo that she was not too keen on the idea of learning a craft. Even her offer of learning a craft that had more to do with the dragons seemed almost half hearted. Tilting his head to one side, he studied her for a moment.
“Therion.” He finally said, giving her a smile. “Correct me if I’m mistaken, but you are here as a Gold Candidate, are you not?” Patting the arm of his chair for a moment, he finally stood and moved to the back side of his desk as he picked up his writing tool and added her name to the slowly growing list upon the hide.
“As a Gold Candidate, you need to be ready to take on more responsibility than even one craft could expect from you. You’re going to become a leader. You are going to need to direct the Weyr and while you will have many staff members here to help you, a great responsibility is still going to fall upon your own shoulders.”
Pausing, he gave her a long look to see what she thought of what he was saying. If she were not willing to take on a craft, was she going to be willing to take on greater responsibility? Looking back down at the list, he made an additional mark next to her name. “Perhaps one defined craft will not be as suitable for you as a Gold Candidate.” He said, pausing again for a moment. He had a choice here, he could put her into several crafts to make his point clear that everyone was needed to help out even with the most mundane tasks… Or he could begin training her exactly for what she would need to be able to handle as a Gold Rider should she impress.
“I will talk with the Headwoman and our Queen rider when she returns. I think a more administrative role will fit you well. Having you and another gold candidate shadowing either of them would be helpful for you in your future. Should they not have the time, I will put you to administrative work directly under me. It’s not a Craft, Therion. It’s a Leadership Role. Are you ready for that sort of responsibility? Your other choice would be apprenticing under a Dragon Healer – but I get the feeling you’re not exactly keen on that either.”

Raelan stood on the outside of the door then took a seat waiting for his turn to meet with the new candidate master. He looked at the door then realized it would be another turn of chores and lessons. The candidate was well versed in lessons after two failed hatchings and hoped for something original with a new candidate master. His clothes that he wore showed their wear with white shirt that had patches and a grey pants. A pair of boots that had seen better days was also worn then he sighed.
He knew there we're a few boys and girl as he called all of those in his position as leftovers. Raelan hoped the next clutch was larger and would give them all more chances. The candidate wasn't like the others he didn't care for a certain color just a honor to impress would be great. A nervous foot started to twitch as he looked around for a moment then waited for his turn. When he heard noises then waited for the other person to come out and for him to meet the new candidate master. His smiled was apparent as he thought so began another round and hoped that he would actually impress this time.

Something she said had seemed to annoy S'nuo. She didn't see what was so wrong with not wanting to get involved in crafts she wouldn't have time to follow up on later. Why was everyone determined to believe there was even the slightest chance she would not be becoming a Weyrwoman? That was what she was here for, and it was what she was going to accomplish. No matter what everyone else thought. She just wished it could have happened already, so they'd stop all this nonsense about "if" and start getting to the "when". She nodded in response to his question as to whether or not she was a Gold Candidate. Of course she was. What else could she be?
Well, at least S'nuo was getting a few things right. She was going to be leader. She didn't see how that could possibly tie into crafts, though. Maybe he would let her off of it when he realized that they weren't going to do her any good. That would be nice. He then stated that perhaps only one craft wouldn't do her any good. Was that a good thing or a bad thing though? She didn't want extra work doing a bunch of different crafts anymore than she wanted to just do one. Of course, just learning a bit about all of them were probably be funner than being force to stick with one thing. At least she would get to keep rotating. And if she did find something she liked, perhaps she would just be able to stick to that. She watched him filling out something on his hide. Hopefully he wasn't marking points off of her. That would be totally unfair. She didn't want extra chores or anything. She just wanted to Impress already and start being treated the way she deserved to be treated.
His next suggestion was much better. Why hadn't he suggested that in the first place? She would love to shadow Raelwyn and see how she did things. Naturally, she wasn't about to do that with some other Gold Candidate (who wouldn't have a chance of Impressing until after Therion had anyways). She also wasn't sure why he was bringing up the Headwoman. Therion could understand that she might have some responsibilities of her own, watching over everyone in the Lower Caverns, but that wasn't what Therion would be doing. Well, maybe he just thought Raelwyn might be too busy. Even the Weyrwoman was unlikely to think of Therion as the thing she was going to be. No, everyone saw her as what she was right now. Well, she would show them all. It would just be a while.
"I think I would love the opportunity to learn some more about leadership, especially as I'll need the responsibility later on, and that way I'll know I have the responsibility to take it on when I need to." It was definitely what she would prefer to do. She could almost laugh, thinking of all the people that would have to go around learning crafts while she was learning things from Raelwyn herself. This would be totally worth it. Maybe someone was finally seeing that she was actually going to turn into someone important to the Weyr.

While the changes was subtle, S’nuo noticed when the girl brightened at the idea of working in a more leadership role. Of course, it could end up being a lot of hidework, but in the end it would all be things the hopeful Gold Candidate would later deal with. The Weyrwoman, after all, dealt hand in hand with the Headwoman and between the two of them, they made sure the entire Weyr ran smoothly and efficiently. Sure the Weyrleader was technically the one in charge, but he could not nearly accomplish as much as the two women while also running the wings. Things would be even more busy around the Weyr when thread actually began to fall in the south.
Pushing the idea of thread out of his mind, S’nuo stood and offered his hand once more to shake hers in agreement. “It’s settled then. I’ll see what I can come up with and who I can get to work with you. Until I get you a mentor, I want you to return to my office after lunch just to check in on things.”
Leading her to the door, S’nuo was not surprised to find another candidate already waiting. There were enough of them to keep him busy, that was certain. Holding the door open for the pretty Therion to make her way out, he motioned for the blonde boy to come on in. This was a candidate S’nuo recognized easily, having seen him on the sands twice before. While the boy was young enough to still stand many more, the Candidate Master felt his confidence for the boy rising with each passing turn.
“Hello, Raelan. My name is S’nuo of Blue Malith. I recognize you from standing. I’m very glad you’re still hopeful.” Following the boy back into the office, he left the door cracked so he would be able to see if any other candidates arrived. Moving back to the desk, he leaned back against it rather than sitting down as he crossed his arms over his broad chest. “Tired of Lessons yet after two turns?”

Raelan came into the room following the candidate master and noticed him just lean up against the desk. "Yeah, I think it's just a matter of time," said Raelan as he looked at the candidate master and sighed. He knew that one day his lifemate would come it was just a matter of being patient though he knew that if that didn't pan out he would stay around. The other idea he had was joining the shield though kept that quiet because his heart was set on a dragon. He said, "Well, it does feel like I've done every chore there is out there,". If there was a disgusting chore it seemed that he had gotten stuck with it and he just sighed.
The candidate master was younger then he thought of and then looked around. He noticed that the place already looked different then it had the last few turns. Raelan just laid back and was relaxed there weren't a lot of things that affected him anymore. His disappointment was already there and he'd overcome it by realizing that there would be more chances for him.

Hearing the candidate’s sigh and his comment of doing every chore out there, the broad shouldered S’nuo couldn’t help but laugh. It was a full, hearty laugh too that would bring a wide smile to anyone’s lips. “Have no fear, Raelan. I’m going to start switching things up on you candidates.” Reaching an arm out, he patted the younger man on the shoulder before walking back around his desk and scratching the young man’s name onto the hide.
“We are going to be apprenticing all of the Candidates to Craftsmen. This will give you guys something productive to do and get you out of the class room, effectively leaving me time to continue to train with my wing for threadfall.”
Looking up at Raelan a moment, he smiled again. “So I want you to think of which craft you might be interested in. Yes, unfortunately we will still have the same chores around the Weyrling Barracks, but there will be less chores in the Lower Caverns and Kitchens and more work with your Craftsman.”

"I would be interested in the healing craft," said Raelan as he smiled at the craft master it was really the only other craft that he was interested in. He looked around thinking about it and hoped that it would really be more interesting with something new added in. The candidate was pleased how the new master was handling things and had to admit that they all needed a backup. Raelan had to admit that they might need skills since they one day might impress. It was a terrible feeling that he might impress and he sighed for a moment at such a sad thought.
He looked at him for a second then asked, "Threadfall it's coming isn't it," as he feared that there really would be threadfall soon? Raelan wanted to fight against thread one day and sighed because he looked around. The candidates had never seen threadfall before and wondered how it would be. Raelan tapped his fingers on the chair and waited for the candidate master to respond.

Picking up the writing tool, S’nuo sketched a few marks upon the hide to make note that Raelen was interested in the healing craft. Hearing the next question that the young man asked, had S’nuo’s hand slowing before he put down the writing tool once more, a sad and heavy look upon his face. Studying the face of the young man for a moment, he could see the fear and worry there.
“Yes, Raelen. Threadfall is coming.” He said with a sigh. S’nuo too, was in no hurry to meet the menace for the first time, but he knew it would soon be unavoidable.
“I think that a session outside would be appropriate for the candidates, so I may show you all the signs and give you a few basic lessons on thread. Most of it is common knowledge, but it never fails to surprise me exactly how ‘uncommon’ common knowledge really is. But look, tomorrow morning to the north east sky. You’ll see the red star. We may not have the seeing stones here in the South, but we still know the signs.”
Tapping his own desk, he paused and looked at a paper where he had been writing weekly to-do lists and plans upon. Turning back to Raelen, he gave the boy a little more of a reassuring smile. “In fact, keep your eyes on the board in the common room each day. I’ll post up when we will have that lesson.”

Raelan listened as the man spoke with a smile and was fascinated that they would learn about thread. "I look forward to the lesson I know that it will be very useful to us and besides there is no harm in learning more," said Raelan as he smiled at the candidate master. He personally hoped that the extra skills would not be needed and that he would impress at the next clutch yet who knew. "Do you think that the queen will return to lay her eggs here," asked Raelan a little worried to the fact that their queen dragon had yet to return? If she had her eggs at the other weyr then would they even have a chance to impress. He didn't want his last remaining chance at a dragon to go to another candidate not even of his own weyr.
"I know it's a dumb question it's just that everyone is talking and wondering if she'll be coming back," asked Raelan and knew that the candidate master would know better then anyone? He wondered if it was because of the attacks and sighed. The one queen that could give them another clutch it would be two turns before Elynth could fly. Raelan couldn't wait that long for the gold weyrling to grow up and waited for a answer. If she did come back maybe soon it would be time for queen to rise again. His mind was always on the next clutch and hoped that his lifemate was in there.

“Of course she will be back.” S’nuo said, a little surprised that the worry had been brought to him. Of course, once he reflected on it, it made perfect sense that any candidate would worry over exactly that. Giving the younger man a smile, S’nuo patted his shoulder before moving toward the door. “The only reason they are at Haven is to help that Weyr get back on its feet. One of our adult golds will need to remain there to govern the Weyr, but rest assured we will have a Senior Queen back home when the Weyrleader deems it is safe again.”
Moving to the door, he opened it and gave the man another reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, our sands will not go long without eggs upon them.”

Rather than a reply from the lips of the candidate master, it was a soft rumble that came through the door to reach Shamara’s ears. The rumble grew slightly before finally turning into a snort. Through the closed door the noises were faint, but the sound of a chair moving could be heard just before the door opened and a tall man with hair cropped so close to his head that it could be debated if there was even hair there rather than just a fuzz looked out. He was tall, though not obnoxiously so and his shoulders were broad enough to nearly fill the candidate office door.
Rubbing his eye with his free hand, it was easy to tell the man had fallen asleep, though upon seeing a new face he opened the door wider and motioned her inside. “Sorry, Shamara. I didn’t mean to take so long answering the door.” Closing the door behind her, he moved back to his desk, though instead of sitting back down he picked up a cup of Klah that had gone cold a candlemark ago and frowned at it. The office itself was now in neat order with only a small stack of hides on the desk along with two spare writing quills. At the far side of the Office a second door was open, this door lead into his personal weyr given to him as the Candidate Master and inside a small blue could be seen as he shifted in his couch to better regard them.
S’nuo didn’t even need to glance at the hide that was hidden in the small pile upon his desk to know that Shamara was not a name upon the candidate list. S’nuo was good with names – so good, in fact, that he only needed to be told once and he’d remember it for life. Shamara was a name he had not yet heard, so he also knew she had to have been born from one of the outlying cotholds rather than in the Weyr itself.
Putting back down his cold up of Klah, he offered his hand to her instead. “My name is S’nuo of Blue Malith. I assume that since you are here, you were Searched as a candidate, Shamara?”
